By the way... you are an animal! How long did it take you to research all those track names??

The music research for every video, is much more time consuming than the video editing.
Especially when not using songs that I already know, because they are all copyright protected.

A word about copyright music in videos:
You are absolutely right... a good soundtrack is crucial to a watchable video.
Problem is copyright infringement.

I made a 14 minute video of my month in Thailand, at the Sunova Factory..... it was so long it absolutely needed the right soundtrack.
I mastered my best ever video, with the perfect songs, hitting all the right "posts" ... so stoked!!!
The project took forever, but I wanted the video to reflect how very special that trip was to me.
I used everything including a Germany Symphony Orchestra rendition of "The Good, Bad and the Ugly"
It was my masterpiece!

Youtube busted me for copyright infringement!
Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song" that was the perfect fit, of melody and lyrics, for the best Thai surf clip.
I usually tried to use lesser known artists and songs to get the job done without being busted... but that video needed a special song, so I used it... and got nailed.

If I got busted again, my entire YouTube channel and ALL video content would vanish forever... so, no music in my vids for a long time.

Sad to say that I never even published the "My Thai" video because I simply couldn't replace the soundtrack...
It was too important to me, for all that the Thailand trip meant to my life... I just couldn't put out a weak video.
I was devastated and it sits unfinished in my editing room.

After the reality of being busted for music content, I researched all the "copyright free music" sites but it was trash or elevator music.

Finally I found "ARTLIST" ... which provides Royalty free music and SFX for video to members.
It costs about $200 USD a year, but I needed decent music that wasn't going to get me banned for life.
ARTLIST has original content that is pretty darn good.
All my latest videos have used this music... instant classics like "Mountains to Move", "It Ain't Cheap Being Poor" and "Running on Fuel"

I only hope ARTLIST continues to sign good, unknown artists with plenty of usable songs.
It takes hours on end, reviewing all their music, to find an appropriate match for a clip.... but a great tune can make a video come to life!

We are blessed to have this kind of passion in our lives.... friends, SUP surfing and music, yewwwwwwwww!

I searched for the music I liked a lot from the nice videos of "Dan's surfing videos" on youtube (alas, he seemed to have deleted a lot of the good ones recently), via soundhound www.soundhound.com/ and was surprised to find they were from totally unknown groups with no info. E.g:



But they had the same editor, "epidemic sound"
Turns out it is a royalty-free service www.epidemicsound.com/ that is quite interesting. if you do not monetize your videos, you can just pay $13 for a month, and use any number of their music royalty-free forever, even if you do not subscribe anymore!

They seem to have pioneered the business model in 2009, and they are Swedish, like spotify...

An interesting article in French (couldn't find an English equivalent) on how this model has disrupted the music royalty business, sepecially in France, which has an old, well established, but ossified and with lots of grift and nepotism music royalties organization, "SACEM" www.lemonde.fr/economie/article/2019/02/15/les-fausses-notes-de-la-musique-libre-de-droits_5423764_3234.html .
Basically, some artists make a living crafting tracks specially for epidemic sound. They do not seem to pay much, but are able to compensate with high numbers, with the explosion of online videos.

Well, I guess it is the benefit of having a system-oriented mind instead of a people-oriented mind (aka introvert / extrovert, or nerd / fun :-) ). Each time I stumble on new information I have to dig deeper.

The trick is to have some additional memory to help remember things, and where you just dump all your findings. I use a personal wiki (I use Foswiki, but Google Sites is also nice) and a bookmark manager that allow to store web links with tags: pinboard pinboard.in but there are others, the pioneer was Delicious en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delicious_(website)

And... Spotify playlists for music I stumble on. When I want a music for my videos, I just sort the playlists by duration, and choose one among those matching roughly the duration

On my personal music tastes, my personal ultra favorites of all times are the "big four of Vienna", Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert www.nytimes.com/2011/01/11/arts/music/11vienna4.html
I ended up discovering that what I liked in them was the combination of european folk dancing roots (a solid rhythm) with an epic tension in the themes, prevalent in their epoch in revolutionary anthems and marchs, enhanced technically with a perfected motivic development.
This is why my musical obsession is Boogie Woogie, that combine a left hand rock-solid rhythm with a moving, impro style right hand.

Most of the bands I like have a boogie pianist in them. For instance, Henri Herbert was what gave the stunning "The Jim Jones Review" its appeal for me:





And now, after this into, my playlists I use to pump me up on the road before a session, and use when looking for a music for a video. There is boogie woogie roots in all of them...
