Just got back 2 days ago. Had a fantastic time and stayed at the Villa Puri Ayu where Jankie resides. Hired a 10 4 JL for 2 days and had great fun. No crowds, glassy conditions and nice occassional sets close to head high. Sanur is also a great place for the family if you dont like the rat race of Kuta.

Will definitely be going back next year

A month ago a West Aussie holidaying in Bali got typhoid on his return. He surfed a lot in Bali , and presumed mechanism was sewerage washed out to sea by the rains . He was quite sick for awhile but responded to antibiotics.
Consider a typhoid shot from your GP.
I dont mean to spoil your holiday but thats the reality.

Now the worlds 2nd favouite tourist destination.
Hence the gridlock traffic 3 hour wait in customs and don't forget the Dengue fever!

"Nearly one third of salmonella infections notified in WA so far this year were acquired overseas, mostly in Bali.

"Travellers to developing countries need to be very careful with the food they eat and the water they drink," he said.

"To reduce the risk of gastroenteritis people should avoid eating salads, raw or runny eggs and fruit that is eaten with the skin on."

Sexually transmissible infections, such as gonorrhoea, chlamydia and HIV, are also considered a high risk in those travelling in Asian countries.

Travellers to Bali were also being warned about the serious risk of rabies. About 60 Balinese have died from rabies in the past two years after animal bites, mostly from dogs.

Many of these bites have been sustained in the southern areas of Bali which are popular with tourists.

Rabies is fatal once symptoms develop.
"

good waves though

Glad I read about the rabies info now.

It's a few years ago now, but last time I was in Bali I came off a boat trip and was staying in a one star place down the end of an alleyway off another tiny alley and got lost trying to find my way back first night (I had only had two Bintangs). I ended up down the end of a dead end, dark alley and when I realised and turned around to go back out a pack of the most mongrel, drooling, evil looking dogs I have ever seen were blocking my way (and I own a dog and like them). Don't know where they came from, but I seriously thought I was in big trouble. They really looked like they meant business. Just had to force myself to be calm and walk slowly out of there without making eye contact with the leader of the pack. They were snarling, growling etc etc as I walked past them. I was sweating on the leader - if he had had a go at me the whole pack (at least a dozen dogs) would have followed.

If I had know about rabies I would have been really ****ing myself.

I had been down to Timor and Roti and had therefore had malaria tablets and had a reasonable first aid kit, but certainly hadn't had rabies shots.

So Brendan.... my advice is, don't go wandering down any dark alleyways.

Hope you get some great waves. Get someone on the beach to take a few pics of you ripping it up. Love to see them when you get back.

Just bought Val a new camera with a great zoom so hopefully she can capture some waves.

Now I will be sticking to the hotel, not going out anywhere or eating or drinking anything to
avoid illness and rabies. Maybe I'll just have to get some shots of others surfing from the pool bar!

It's funny, a bunch of different mates who have been there dozens of times have never been sick.

You'll have a ball bnacca
Just be a bit careful what and where you eat.I don't think the dogs are an issue. They have strychnine baited a huge number of them..come to think of it no wonder I had a guts ache.
What board are you taking?A friend who just returned was saying how expensive the hire can be...and he ain't poor. thus wants to buy a sub 9' no questions traveller.

Hey Brenno, while were all at it I might add one,
with our freezing conditions down here at the moment[I lost feeling in my fingers this morning during the early morning surf] be aware of heat stroke in the humid conditions up there, it got me when I was there this time a couple of years ago,
have a fun trip and get heaps of waves,

Hey Basecurve, I'm taking a an 8'6" x 28.75" x 4". Just finished glassing it today.
Also taking the trusty 6'0" Fish after dusting it off! Pacific Blue is OK with anything
under 3m.
