Probably a topic that been done before. Had my first prone surf on my trustee McCoy 6'8 nugget this am (as strong offshore winds) in 6 months. Havent thought too much of prone surfing over last few months as have been hooked on SUS/SUP. Everything clicked like I had never had a break.. Wave anticipation, reflexes and paddling power. A couple if times I was by reflex looking to plant my paddle on a turn but quickly remembered there was none. So even though the surf was small (but fast and closing out a bit on a lower tide) I felt that SUP had helped my surfing somehow. Has any one else had similar experience?

Surfing improves your surfing. SUP is surfing, therefore SUP improves your surfing.

a short sup- no. surfing a 12'6- yes. reason, your paddle leverage won't move a 12'6 too much. more finesse required- translates better to shortboard.

the few times i short board its not good after a short sup, but after i've been surfing 12'6 it feels like i've been surf the shortie every day

cheers

Ive got a few long boards Mac ones 14ft the other 12,6 and the other 9,3 , the 14 surfs unreal if you like going in straight lines , the 12,6 like pee wee herman trapped in the hulks body , and the 9,3 well thats just way too , short

I have been sup surfing much more than surfing my longboard over the past couple of years, however when I do surf the longboard I have noticed I drive it harder down the line and when cranking a turn I drive the board through the turn with more power from my body.
This happens because surfing the sups, especially my previous bigger sup, requires more force to drive it or in particular turn it. Possibly standing up all the time constantly keeping balance works the legs as well, again adding to the strength of the legs. So when I surf the longboard I surprise myself by how powerful some of the turns are, especially roundhouse cutty's.

Good opinions and I agree SUP is surfing,...I should have worded my title better "does SUP improve your prone surfing" Looking forward to seeing any difference when I eventually ride my mal.

I have no doubt at all that SUP improves your surfing. A lot has to do with how it works your balance muscles and power base. If you actually turn around your paddle it can do a heck of a lot for mid section strength and back injury prevention.

Try standing up going through the breaks, while paddling around And more importantly trying to catch waves.
I have seen a lot of folk doing this lately. I asked one bloke would he become a better stand up paddler if he persevered and actually stood up. He told me to f off and buy a proper board hahaha
