I have been comparing my DC 17 to some other down wind boards i have seen on the net , in particular i noticed my fin is near the tail of the board and others i have seen are not only much larger but further forward.Would this be because my board is more of a planing board and the other set up with the larger fin is more suited to displacement hulls for stability?Like a Yacht?

Touchy subject! Dont now why im just interested to learn some more about these boards. Also in some boards are they trying to get the best of both worlds.
Seems from what i can gleam displacement better for the flat and planing for the surf.

The 19' Penetrator is at Dale's factory if you would like to make comparisons.
Teatrea/Lacey, not sure if it was either if you who called me the other day, but feel free to borrow it if you go for a paddle with Dale and/or Ross Munro who is the president of SUPSA. (usual conditions, you break it you buy it)

Here's a pic of the new 18' Bark.. You can see why the fin might be so far from the tail.. It's also a more displacement type hull.

Its 18ft X 26 wide sounds like a stand up and looks fast would love to see how it went on a few runners.

Hey teatrea
The fin on your 17 is a bit smaller than most out there but it never really bothered me to much and in all the downwind runs I've done i have only had the fin come out of the back off the wave once and that was on a really big step runner other than that it has worked fine. If you do want a bigger one dale was going to make me on for it for a cheap price.

There heaps on this forum and the standupzone about displacement hulls so might be worth a read.

Sh!!!!!!t what a radical stand up ...sorry mate I was wrong. That would fly but at only 26 it would be really hard to stand on espcially with that tail.
