I am just interested to see what routes guys in Perth/Mandurah are doing for downwind runs.

I have done these when the wind is blowing the usual south westerly, but was wondering what others have done? Particularly any open ocean stuff.

Gday Zimbo.
That second picture from Alfred cove to the Narrows would be rather dangerous on a weekend arvo in summer, with the amount of yachts and power boats that are usually out there. Myself and a couple of other guys usually paddle from Sandtracks to Nth Cott when the breeze is up. Once the summer pattern starts no doubt we'll be back into it again.
Cheers Luke

True admittedly I did do that one last weekend when that front came through so not many, if any one out on the water.

I can see myself getting run down by some CUB (cashed up bogan, dont know if other states know this acronym) on a jetskii or speedboat.

Thanks

Zimbo I believe Waterbogan is the generic term.
I have only done downwinders on the river but have wondered of late how a run from Freo to N Cott would go in the 30knot+ winds we get most summer afternoons.
Any runners to catch or do you just get blown to shore alot?

I have done a few from City Beach to Scarborough but it's pretty bumping in the sou-west as the wind chop and swell come from differing directions. If you head north from Scarb's it becomes heaps smoother once you round Triggs point. So Triggs to anywhere North I would recommend. North Beach, Watermans, Hillaries - all good.
Never done one on a true downwind board but would be keen to see if it is possible to get runners on our coast. Whether the wind/swell directions need to be more in sync?

The Sandtracks to Nth Cott downwinder is not too bad for a good souwester and being summer the swell is pretty well non-existent.
Looking forward to trying from Falcon Bay to Mandurah Y.C. once the seabreezes start in earnest. Definately am going to train alot more this time around for the Rotto race.

Hey Jenkz
I thought about the falcon to doddis run a few times, just want someone else to paddle with. Give me a bell if you are looking for a sunday run in the next month or so, as I am usually down there doing the river / canal paddle.

Hey Jenkz,

How did you plot out your paddle like that on the image?

Rez I just used Google earth and click on the Ruler icon on the top bar and it even tells you the distance.

ALthough the best is my garmin 405 GPS watch which automatically plots the route, heart rate, speed and elevation for me they are really cool here is the route I did the other day downlaoded to Google Earth. It automatically laps at 1km intervals.

Technically, the South side of Heirisson Island is for WA Water Ski Club users only. Not that I mind, just thought I would let you know in case you see any inspectors about or skiers there on the day. Nice images, BTW.

Really? Did not know that, thanks Laurie will plot a new route next time.

I see heaps of kayakers on that side as well I should pose as the water police and start issuing tickets

cheers

You would probably get away with it most times but there's always the chance of meeting with a cranky inspector.
