Hey Breezers and Breezettes,

I need some input. As you may have read below I trashed my 11'NSP running rapids on the weekend. Its recoverable and I will attempt a repair but I am wanting something thats got a bit more performance in the waves anyway. I love the look of the Jimmy Lewis but I think it may be a little bit high performance for me at this point. So these are the boards on my list:

Starboard 10'5

C4 10'6

PSH 10' AA (or WAA?)

It will be for surfing reef breaks that are knee to shoulder high. Its pretty windy and we get a lot of chop so something not too wobbly. Though I am prepared to put in the hard yards if required. At the moment Starboard is my top choice as I can get a good price on it but was wondering how it stacked up against the others.

Not sure about customs as dont think my surfing warrants one yet but I suppose a DC or SurfShapes would be top of the list. Though I notice these have pulled in noses. Is this going to make a big difeerence to these Mal-Style noses in the boards I listed?

I'm 6' and 95 kg. I have pretty good balance and a strong paddler but surfing wise I'd be intermediate at best. Could I go below 10'? Gut feeling says I could but what do you think?

I'm the opposite mate...good surfer **** paddler....at about 105 kegs I'm looking to go from the kalama down to a 9'3 or 9'6 Sub vector...a PSH 9'6 WAA or maybe a custom...if I can get below 10' I reckon anyone can........

it really depends on the waves and the style you want to ride.

I am very hesitant to go smaller than my SB 10'5 - because i lose alot of fat section drive (this makes the marginal days so much fun the VERY thing that got me into SUP in the first place) for a disproportionate amount (less) of looseness gain- and on smaller boards i find it becomes alot closer to short board surfing - which i can do anytime the surf is good on my 6'4.

As you get experienced you will learn how to throw the bigger boards around.

If you are happy to wait for swell with power then sure - go small! But in OZ that often means you are back to waiting for swell and surfing with crowds -..

Crowds not really an issue here but yeah I hear you about less power in the waves. That sums up most of our swell where I live.

I am a good 30 min drive from the beach (+ a 1km paddle out) so I want a board thats good for any conditions but still up a performance notch (or 2) from old mate NSP. Still leaning towards the SB 10'5. Maybe a DC or PSH further down the line when I'm ripping (heh). But at the moment I'm just not sure the payoff would be there at my surfing level.

Anyone got a review of the PSH 10'? I suppose I should be trawling Cassos site...

Lobes.. I'll have my new Naish 10' Mana in a couple of days.. I'll let you know what it's like.. ..btw it's a new type of Naish construction and it should be very strong.

The new PSH 10'er is not available yet (I don't think) .. Big Kev has one on order and should have it soon..

Three boards is my quiver.. .. The Glide for down-winders.. The classic 11'6" AST for cruising around and my daughter to use.. And the new 10' Mana.

Oh yeah.. A new custom 9' SnowBoard.. Can't wait for that one.. Just need to rob a bank first..

I think you could for sure go under 10 ft 95kg is about average for a lot of paddlers and if you have good balance already then go for it your surfing will thankyou. There are son good 9'6 boards that are made for that weight PSH 9'6 wide AR, Naish 9'5 maybe JL 9'9 might also be worth looking at. Yes they will be tippy to start with but that should pass. Get something with the right amount foam for you. Deep down you will know what you can handle and go with that gut feeling. If you just want ease of use go for 10'6

I moved from an 11'2'' to the 10'5'' about 7 weeks ago.
Like most people that move to a new board I can clearly say I love it.
I did try a 9' 8" and found it bulky and stumpy. Almost like the makers where trying to compensate for lack of length by bulking up.
Watching Josh Constable win the Australian SUP title on the weekend it appeared clear to me that SUP is a long board discipline.
Even the shorter SUPs at the titles where 8'6".
I didn't see any shorter ones.
8'6"is a LONGBOARD.
You should move around on it backward /forward etc to get the best performance from it. Constable did that to good effect
If you recognise this, then you can see that 10'5" is not excessive in length.
You can do floaters, cutbacks, reentries, tail slides, plus nose rides drop knee turns and put the dog on the front on quiet days.
The 10'5" is brilliant.

Hey Lobes,

If you want something stable but you can rip on as you progress the 10'6WAA is the go with a thruster PC 5 or 7 fin set.

The 10WAA will not be here until about NOV i believe.

The 9'6WAA at your weight would give you a challenge but you would get used to it. Depends if you would like it though as you seem to like glide.

A custom DC 9'4 would fill the bill just get 1/2 more thickness its more short board style.

If you thought the 10'6WAA was a possibility I have 2 and I'm looking to sell one happy to do a deal.

I am waiting to see how the 9'5" Mana demos - both it and the 10' Mana seem to be about the same width at just under 32" if the specs are to be believed. In that case, the shorter Mana with the smaller volume might be a real option for heavier people over 90 kgs in more challenging conditions.

I gather that WindsurfingPerth are going to have one of these to demo soon. Not much good for you Lobes, but hopefully someone with a bit of skill will write it up when they get a go.

I went from a 12'1" Laird to a 9'8" with relatively no problems, I'm 98kgs and am not great at surfing or paddling, not bad balance but no real issues with going smaller.

In short I think you are being completely realistic and should go for something around the 10' mark.

Ok I have to throw in a question at this point.

If you want to drop length normally its to get more performance?

If you drop length but significantly increase width you will loose what you gain as you will tend to flat turn.

Excessive width prevents you putting it on a rail in high speed turns.

We have 125 and 130kg guys riding 30 inch boards, the primary stability is all in the rail design and where the volume is put in the board not just the width.

The old saying cant get something for nothing.

Just got in from a surf on my 10'5 - so much fun.

When the wave face opens up my surfing approach on this board is virtually identical to that on my 6'4. Wind off the bottom - get as vet as possible and set the top turn rail for a 130 degree hack. If the wave is a bit slow crack the reo off the section that is now coming at you - repeat.

Float over crumbly sections - get on the nose for the fanging little sucky wall section.

so i'm getting most of my surfing hit - with the benefit of good paddling speed and great drive through fat sections. I just cant see why i would want to go any smaller.

This little vid was posted a while back:

http://exposureroom.com/c456f77e56cd47539504fdcaa730e7be/

you can really feel the rails and the flow of the board through this piece of vision.

Nice one Reflex - certainly look to be throwing the SB around. Great to see the home break on the big screen too! Novel angles.

Thanks everyone for your input,

Reflex and Elbeau, really good to hear your thoughts on the 10'5. You pretty much confirm that no way is it going to be a bad board, which is what I thought. Elbeau its interesting I thought the same thing about the 9'8 being a really bulky board, I've never ridden it but it looks real thick from the pics I've seen.

Phil (Ogsup) I thought I tried the PSH 10' at OG at the demo day but it must have been the 10'6, thanks for clarifying that. I may well be in touch about your 2nd 10'6. In terms of width I'm on a 32' wide board at the moment so ready to go to at least 30' or under.

Jacko, you mentioned the JL 9'9... my dream board man But really not sure its the right next one for me. Hmmm, watch this space.

Yeah i have probably talked down the conditions where I am as well. Where I surf we get waves in the windy season only, its usually blowing 20+ knots by 10am and pretty choppy too. Tried the Naish 9'6 in calm conditions at OG and was not that easy to balance. So now I'm wary of going that size (on any brand) in our local conditions.

Oliver LoL, I'm glad you're here to ground me man. You speak it true

I have been on a C4 9'3 sub vector but I think there is a 9'6 and a 10. These are wider and easier to stand.
I also have been riding a ron house 9'10 quad. this one can be a little tippy though.

I think this is good advice.....I'm in a simillar boat in alot of ways Lobes. Height, weight etc.

As DJ said, I'm hoping to be a death eater with the 10'0" WAA when it is available but I just gotta remember to...breathe...breathe...be patient.
