Today a few of use did a flat water adventure and paddled around past Port Melbourne and across the top of the bay to Williamstown.

We paddled around the Willy marina and out to the point and then decided to paddle straight across the top part of the bay to Station pier.

Half way across just as we approached the shipping channels we see this large tug-boat coming from the city area to our left and to our right we see this very.. VERY large cargo ship heading our way.. We thought will we make it or will we not.. The tug-boat driver gives us a friendly wave as he passes across in front of us.. We at least I thought it was friendly.

We decided to go for it.. We were half way across the shipping channel and we see the big tug-boat do a quick turn and come steaming towards us.. He waving his arm.. He's yelling at us.. He's yelling "GET OUT-TA THE WAY".. He's pointing back.

We pause.. The big ship is coming fast and it seems the wrong way to go back seeing we were half way across.. As the tug-boat gets closer we're thinking Jeez. We're in trouble now.. Maybe he's called the water police.

When the tug-boat gets even closer and not looking like he's going to slow down I see him pointing to the back at his boat.. and I realize he's not yelling 'Get out-ta the way'.. He's yelling "GET ON THE WAVE".. and pointing to his bow wake.

What a hoot.. .. Who'd have thought.. Maybe he'd read Brendon's post last night.. . ( www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=50728 )

I have pics.. Heaps of pics and will post them soon.

My heart was in my mouth half way through reading that, DJ. The thought of going past the point of no return across the path of a tanker and realising you're not going to make it. Scary stuff. What would you do? Probably best not to get in that situation in the first place, hey?

Glad it turned out OK and you got to ride some waves - what a cool tug driver.

The tug driver deserves my paddle salute.

I had this made to convey various emotions without saying a word.

Good one Swanie.. Love the paddle..

Here's my pics from todays paddle.

Once we had paddled over to Willy I got my camera out and took a pic of this big pelican sitting on the top of this yacht mast.

I've not seen them do that before.

When I got close it made this loud drumming sound.

We then came across a boat called Pelican.

It was a cool and overcast day but the water was glassy.

It doesn't get much glassier than that.. Paddling with me was Jonathan, Dave and Mick.

We had already paddled a long way.. All the way from that beach in the distance with the city behind it.

We found this old Navy ship.

Mick points out a boat nearby that was in the America's cup once.

I watched as they lifted this yacht out of the water.

There's no getting away from them.

Dave check to see if anyone is inside this old beauty.

Mmmm That reminds me.. Only three more sleeps before the new Star Trek movie.. Can't wait.

Dave spots a gap and thinks about paddling through.. I said he might get squashed if those big ships move any closer together.

I followed Dave through and thought 'let's get squashed together'

It was a tight squeeze.. but do'able.

Jonathan follows.

Now for the next challenge.. Why paddle around when you can go under.

We were like big kids playing follow the leader.. I almost did a Liberarchie to Mick here.

Here comes Jonathan.. Nice water color.

We kept going and checked out some more War ships.

I didn't see that sign.

Or that one.

We decided to head back..and go straight across.

We were about to enter the shipping channel and we stopped to let this tug boat go past.

He gives us a wave (with his hand) as he goes past.

We see a big cargo ship coming in the distance but still decide to go for it.

Then we hear a toot from the tug boats horn and we see him turn and head straight for us.. He was yelling out what sounded like 'Get out of the way'.

Once we realized that he was yelling 'Get on the wave' and pointing to the back of his boat it was time to put the camera away and try to catch a wave.

We never really got close enough to catch the bow wave but I got a couple of nice runners.

Still good reason to grin when you get a wave that you don't expect.. What a nice tug boat driver.

We then put pedal to the metal and paddled back to Station Pier where the Spirit of Tassie was.

Then under Station Pier.

I've almost hit my head on that pipe hanging down a few times now.

We then headed for Rex Hunt's fish'n'chip shop.

We put our boards up on the pier and we got stuck into some nice hot chippies.

While relaxing and eating our chips we see this Police boat come around the corner.. Looking for us we think.. We waited for it to leave before we did.

It was straight under the next pier to head back to where our cars were parked.

It's great color of the water under these piers.

Almost back to the cars and no sign of the cops... Phew.

After loading the boards and saying bye to the guys I head off in my little zook with my big Naish on top and the first set of lights that I stopped at this Police car stops alongside and hits the siren.. It scared the hell out of me... I thought they've got me now.. Lucky it was for the car in front.. Phew!

One last stop at Sammy's place to check out Pammy.

You could start your own SUP magazine DJ.
The format you use with pictures and a basic story line is a real winner.
Maybe some of the established mags could look at doing a DJ segment. "Adventures with dolphins etc"
Looking forward to the next installment.

The amazing thing about going for a paddle with DJ is that even on an overcast, offshore wind, winters day it turns into an adventure! And the "ghost paddle" thing, well yeah you get that at 11am on a Monday.....

Hey DJ,
What a story, another classic! Great work!
Just a heads up though mate.....the area you paddled around ie - the Spirit of Tassie and underneath that very entry you guys utilised into Beacon Cove is a Port of Melbourne Corporation Security Regulated Zone under the Maritime safety regulations which means it is strictly off limits to everyone!! The area is regularly patrolled by Port Security (obviously they were on an extended coffee break!) and you risk a fine of $5000 if caught within that area. The Regulated Zone extends to within 50 metres of the Spirit of Tassie even when it is docked at Port Melb.

I would hate to see you getting a big fine mate, so just a heads up for next time!
Bloody good adventure though if you ask me!
