Can Anyone tell me how top speed is calcualted with gps data , is it measured over a certain distance or is it an instantaneous thing , ie if you moved your body very quickly would it calculate a top speed from that sudden fast movement?

Thanks

Why ?? What sort of top speed have you recorded, or heard of being recorded (in SUP?)....

I'd be hitting up a search engine like Google for this one....

I went for a 10k paddle today and my data said top speed 20.6 Kmh i just want to know if its accurate.I use my phone and put it in my pockett in a sealable plastic bag.And i use the site endomondo its prettty cool but im gunna contact them and ask if they can put stand up on the list , currently i choose kayaking.I think its a great training tool for those who are interested and if you have a phone you dont have to buy an expensive gps watch.

Here the data

I googled it. Reams of info on the subject. The op may want to do the same to find an answer to his specific question.

In my opinion, it is a very complex subject. Doppler shift, velocity computed in three dimensions...

As for measuring a quick move of a handheld gps, I suppose you could try it. My guess is that it will not be accurate, because that's not what it's designed for.

I think they use accelerometers for that type of motion.

I'm not a man of science, but I play one on the internet.

thanks
if i looked it up i wouldnt of understood it anyway , thought that would be the case though. The data wouldnt be much use if it recorded every jerk or sudden movement.

teatrea, I looked at your file. We use Gps's on our maliko runs here. My top speeds on an oc-1 are usually in the 13.5mph range. Your 12.8mph is reasonable - if you were flying on a wave.

The fastest gps I've heard of on an SUP is 20, on a 10-6 sufboard, 25mph. Those readings were by a very experienced surfer in very heavy conditions.

Yeah, 25mph or 40km/h sounds about right on a nice fast wave, especially if it was a long fast point break.

Mine where recorded on falt water today , maybee i forgot to tun it off before i got in the car Lol.I have had it on me when surfing runners and the top speed was higher again.
Thats why i posed the question , to see if it is accurate. With the phone in my pockett i thought their would be less movement which would maybee increase the accuracy.

Oh well it was nice to think i got the old 17footer up to 20 clicks for a while.

Check out the GPS and speed sailing forum under windsurfing. These guys have been using GPS to measure speed for years and will likely be able to tell you exactly what you are after.

It is my understanding that they always work on averages over a set distance as the units are prone to spike, and that is the accepted means of measuring speed in that sport.

I haven't done that many runs with GPS but your average speed sounds reasonable whereas the spike of 20km/h is probably just that - a spike. We've managed average speeds of 9km/h where our max never exceeds 11-12km/h on perfectly flat water - no wind or wave assistance. On downwinds we hit max speeds of 25km/h and I've heard of higher in SUP'ing.

GPS Action replay has software you can download to analyze your file which gives more detail.

aus301 is spot on.
If you go to ka72.com you can download your GPS files and the software will do all the work for you. You can also overlay your tracks onto Googe Earth to see where youve been too.
If you are interested a Navi Gt11 or 31 are the units to get.
We set them to record your 2 second peak speed, 5 x 10 second speeds etc.
You can also see where you went slower or faster to help in training etc.
Hope this helps.
