Does anyone have useful feedback on best GPS watch/device for training on SUP and paddleboard.
Want to be able to strap to deck or ankle as well us for watch as assume every paddle stroke back and AND forward adds distance and gives false read of distance actually travellled?
thanks

Check with Downwinder, or wait for him to reply.

However, remember that during the paddle stroke, your paddle blade only moves "backwards" marginally, maybe only a few inches. The rest of the time, during the recovery stroke you and paddle are going forwards, and during the reach you are both going forward, and during the stroke your bottom hand is probably stationary, and the top hand is actually going forwards.

So I think a wrist GPS would mainly be picking up the pattern of "surge forward, then pause, surge forward, pause, surge, etc etc".

========
Edit; as Dave goes past the camera man, you'll notice that the bottom hand is mostly stationary (during the stroke) relative to the camera....

It would be good if the watch can identify the "pause" and count your stokes...

I find the Google Earth is a good tool, to trace your approximate course upon return. Or measure point to point distances, or if you move in an arch or a dog leg, you can estimate that too, using the "path" function (within the Ruler Icon) in Google Earth. Or even trace a planned course before you set out....

I had a 305 and now I am using a 310 XT
No hesitation go for the 310 XT. Not much more if you look at the features but a bit smaller and easier to wear with the same screen size and most importantly a lot more waterproof. You can do your swimming laps with it if you want.
If one day you get caught by a wave trying to go through an heavy beach break this one will handle the water pressure.....
I lost mine 305 at sea. It fell and I did not noticed straight away.
Same story with my 310 but it was on the snow and I could see it falling
Since then I have a little elastic permanently attached to the bracelet that I put around my wrist so if the little pins unlock from the body my gramin is still hanging in the air and not deep down the ocean

As DW said get either of those Garmin's, I've got the 305, great investment to track your training.
Use the Garmin Connect website (connect.garmin.com/) great site to upload all your training then track & monitor it.

Anyone knows what the update rate is on these GPS watch?
If it's less than 5hz I doubt the arms movements make much difference if one consider the big picture...

The Iphone now has some great GPS apps that give you the same info as a garmin. The new ones are also very accurate and can send auto emails to people of locations sent at intervals for saftey. The big plus is that you can use it for music and you have a phone for distress calls.

The apps also allow you to export your info to the Garmin site of you prefer that format but the sites that the workouts upload to automatically are very good use Google Maps, lap times etc etc. One thing I do love is that you can view your course at any time on satellite maps on the screen of the IPhone. For example if you have set a course and want to see how you are travelling against past times for that course etc.

The key is to buy a real water case not one of the cheaper ones. I use the H2O case and headphones and it is comfortable and sounds good all the while tracking all of the info that the Garmin does.

Once again, Apple taking over the world.
