Discoverd i had a GPS APP on my phone (Endomondo) , so i went for a paddle to check it out , this would be a great training tool , also a good way to test different board speeds too. What suprised me was the top speed , i reached 36 kmh on a wave in the creek mouth.Thats if its accurate?Any way check your phone or download the Application its free.Chuck your phone in a waterproof bag and check your stats.

Teatrea mate thats too hard! Just buy yourself the Garmin forerunner 310XT.
Its the ants pants. Best training watch I have ever used $378 dollars & a tax deduction (comes under training tool ) if you work on the beach.

Yep boxman the 310XT is way better than the 305 or the 405. Why? its just a simple watch & effective. the 410ct must be new! so I don't know if its any good???

A simple way to test the gps speed is turn it on and jump in the car,
test it slow and test it fast, it will give you a good idea if the speed is accurate.

I bought the 310XT with heart rate monitor after seeking feedback on this same forum a few months ago.
I mostly use it for prone paddleboard training and club mal training.
It is properly waterproof and surf-proof unlike the smaller 405 model which triathletes and runners use. It is pretty large on the wrist and sometimes takes a little while to pick up satelites but otherwise is a great training tool and very reliable and accurate matching in readings to handheld GPS devices. You can also download the data on to your PC and it overlays statelite images and google maps.
