Thinking of getting one of these units. Can anyone tell me about the standard mounts? Is it best to use the FCS plug mount rather than the adhesive mount? And does the adhesive mount come on and off as required or is it a permanent attachment? If it comes off easily, does it leave any marks on the board?

Thanks for any help.

I'll show you my GoPro Paul.. I think the best thing to do is use the square black plastic mount that it comes mounted on in the packaging and just tape it to your board where you want it.. and then peal the tape off and remove it when you want to.

I have lost two now from the black plastic mounts being torn right off, definitely get the FCS plug put in.

Thanks David, I'll give you a call tomorrow about that. Do you find that taping down is secure enough for downwinders and surf? Also, do you have the HD model?

Mine is not the HD model.. It's the standard wide lens.

For flat water and even down-winders it's fine.. but if you're going to use my method in the surf you'd want to have a coloured float attached.. just in case.

Hey Woody,

For the surf I would suggest the Casso Sucker Cam set up with a float.

Inexpensive easy to use and can transfer from board to board in seconds.

I'm sure DJ has one of the old thread numbers to show you what I mean.

GoPro's suction cup mount. I can't believe that its never ripped off. I've buried the front of my OC-1 to my knees pitch poling down a wave face (more times than I care to remember) and its stayed on. Never even backed it up with tape or a leash.

Yeah I thought of that but on the GoPro site they actually say (and I quote)...

NOT RECOMMENDED for surfboards, snowboards or other high-impact sports. Only recommended for non-impact activities.

I use the plastic adhesive mount or extension unit. I know a lot of guys dont like the look of a foreign object adhered to the front of their board, but after a while, you dont even notice it!

Run a piece of fishing line from the camera back to the leash, fishing line can be held tight against board with small amounts of wax.

Be that as it may, it seems to work. One could always back it up with a piece of nylon line to act as a leash. There was a funny video on ocpaddler.com of a guy who lost his surfing the Mokes off Lanikai, HI. He went back later and dove the reef and found it. Video on it showed the wipeout and then fish swimming by it on the bottom.

Hi Paul,
I've had a Go Pro for 18 months now [ Actually updated to the HD!]
I've used all of the various attachments including the suction cup version on both my Sup as well as kiteboard. Provided you ensure the board surface as well as the suction cup are clear of salt, sand etc, it will stay securely mounted. I'd still tether it with some fishing line though.

Some of the footage I took when I was 4WD' in Robe recently gave the suction cup it's best test. It was mounted on the underside of the Sup, which was on the roofracks. I then threw my vehicle at all sorts of terrain, which included some big washouts and corrugations and it held fine!

Drop past the store if you're keen and I'll show you the suction cup mount.

Cheers

Warwick [ Fri morning looks good for an early if you're keen. Half Moon again?]

Friday sounds great Warwick, though this deserves its own thread.
