We went Dec/Jan 2012 and stayed at Nusa Dua in the Hyatt. Perfect spot for a range of ability levels with gentle breaks right out front - more challenging stuff to the left and right, with big outside reefs for the more adventurous. None of the horrible chaos of Kuta but some nice little villages nearby for cheap eats and shopping if that's your thing.
We had no need for transport to surf over a 10 day stay and there where waves everyday. I presume you know that the east side of the island is the go that time of the year. We took all our own equipment but plenty of hire options. It rained a lot but winds were generally light and offshore

Apart from one spot, the crowds where minimal.
