I recently had the pleasure of meeting Steve, the owner of Stand Up Paddle Gear Australia. As his shop is not right on the beaches (it is in Terrey Hills), you might not think to go and have a look.

I was pleasantly surprised by the ease of parking, the range of boards and Steve’s friendliness and enthusiasm for SUP.

The range of boards includes: Coreban, Jimmy Lewis, Laird, Gerry Lopez, NSP, McTavish, Simon Anderson, Luke Short plus soft tops and inflatable’s. Steve has even flown in some of the newer boards, such as the Coreban Nitro, for demo purposes.

In addition, you can find other SUP essentials such as paddles, leashes, rail tape and even some street SUP boards.

Steve also has a good range of demo boards and has the following on his web site (supgearaustralia.com/) – “And even better - if you buy a board that you really don't like, you can bring it back in within 30 days and we'll swap it for one you do like!”

I definitely think Stand Up Paddle Gear Australia is worth a visit!

My post above was driven by the fact that typically we post when we want to complain about something, but we don’t often post when we get good service.

Additionally, I live about an hour from the beaches, so it was great to find a shop that was a lot closer for me and someone who was as helpful as Steve. I have also not heard of anyone else who offers the board swap, so thought others might be interested.

Hopefully this topic can be read in the spirit with which it was intended and give credit where credit is due.

Board swap yes, i seen that mmm so if i buy a board and dont like it then i swap it and dont like that one and then swap it again, you know where i'm going with this. I'm sure there is fine print other wise this is a great way to go broke and thats no good for anyone..

As soon as some one use's a board it becomes 2nd hand and drops in value. I know if i did this then i would only last so long. We would all like to think that every one would do the right thing but unforuntaly it's no longer that world!!!

What i would do and this is just me of course is i would try my best to recommed they get the right board first time then there should be no issue.

Hey i could be way off on this and your mate could kill it but from where i sit which is pretty close to what your mate does it seems like only one thing could happen!!!

I think the reason you are getting so many red thumbs is you made your post sound like a add for the shop, it's one thing to thank them for great service but its another to list everything they sell and do. Don't take any of this the wrong way i'm just saying it how it looks.

Hi Jacko, no offence taken and thanks for the advice for future posts.

For the record, I have only met Steve once - while I am quite happy for people to have a negative view of my posting abilities, I would hate to think that they would have a negative view of Steve and his business.

Some forums actually have a policy against praising shops, because topics like this can quickly go to the dogs. I always thought it strange to have a policy against praise, but have seen evidence why from the kitesurfing forums, and may yet see why here.

Sure does read like an infomercial - sure you're not a copywriter?

Hey BTRD, the shop sounds great, Steve sounds great, just some of the text you used was cut and pasted off the home page, so it looked a bit suspicious.

Good on you for giving a guy a plug,

As laurie mentioned, this sort of comment / praise can lead to all sorts of comments and innuendos.

I too am intrigued by the board swap policy, as I am sure that if you used a board even once of twice and found it not to be to your liking, it would at least have one nick or ding in it,

I am pretty sure one of our locals down here in sunny SA brought a board from Steve as I dont think we have a Coreban distributor here, he was well pleased with the service provided.

Do you have any other jokes? Or are you going to keep telling the same one for the next two years?

It is a really good shop.

I was in there for the first time on Saturday with my sister-in-law who was after a new board. I figured I knew enough about boards to point her in the right direction but Steve had some interesting suggestions that really helped with the decision.

She walked away VERY happy with her new package.

Thanks mate - taken here the way it was intended....I'll be sure to drop by next time I'm over that side of Sydney.

Chin up, some strange types on here but also some good guys.

I think a plug for good service is a good thing. I suppose if you got poor service you would always keep talking about that too (maybe not in print). The board swap seems a great thing if you dont own a shop which I dont. But if I new a shop that did that you can't go wrong so many choices. Not all shops have Demo boards which makes it harder for them to sell boards IMO. Now for a plug whilst there is freedom of speech in the SUP Forum. Both of the Guys I have bought boards from in WA let me demo many boards. I am not close to a SUP shop only 400kms away so it great both Jason from West Oz Kites & Phil from WA Surf made the effort to have demo boards available. Oh the other WA Sup sellers may also have boards for demo but these guys were more easy for me when I have to T up waves & travel & time off. So after that now I'm reddy to be shot down in a blaze of glory! Ha Ha Ha
