I contacted the organisers to find this out before posting here and was informed that this year there will only be one class. I asked which one it is and said that I presume it's 12'6" and under as I know most of the North Qld outrigger paddlers are just starting out on 11 & 12' surfing boards. The reply I got was that there are no limitations this year, ie. no class therefore you can race anything you like ????

I'm not sure they know there is such a thing as specific racing boards let alone that they come in 14', 17' and 18' in length. So I didn't bother posting here as I'm not sure many if any would go. I think it will mainly be outrigger paddlers having a go on whatever they've got.

And yes they are offering an 8km (same as the OC1's do. It is around 2 islands and crosses major major tides...map on there site) and 250m sprints.

hi sue, i remember you talking about this at coffs, saying the tides would be a brutal nightmare on a sup and the schedule is so tight no allowance would be made for conditions. are you still going to have a dig?
cheers

I agree with you Sue , they should make it 12'6" only for all races at Hamo. Easier logistically.

No doubt you would need to be a member of AOCA to compete ?? or would sup be open to anyone.
This is a great weekend if anyone is considering going to it.

G'day Kaikaha
At the end of the day you’d be better of just going to Maui in July & do the 15km Naish Race as its in a straight line from A to B & you’re pretty much just surfing the ocean swell the whole way ( Bulk Fun ). Cheap entry fee with big prize money. Most of the girls are built like Jenny Ryan tiny & lean & can whip the men’s a##e + there will be around 200 SUP’s at the starting line ( now how much more fun is that. ) By the time you price the airfare & accommodation for a week Maui would not be that much more expensive than Hamilton Island + AOCRA races have expensive entry fee with little or no prize money.
see ya in da ocean

I have raced that course many times around Hamo in a outrigger canoe and the tides up there are really big and there is heaps of current around the island.

You really need to know the course and your water up there as the end of the runway has brought many a paddler/outrigger team unstuck as the water is really rough in that particular spot.

It is a beautiful part of the world to race, but it is very challenging and you would have to prepare yourself well and get used to paddling in the choppy s###, backwash off the island, boatwash from heaps of support boats, and submerged rocks.

If you prepare well you will have a ball.

The beers/partying after the race is all worth it
