I stop over in Hawaii 3 times a year on the way to Seattle... Buy a return ticket on Jetstar or Hawaiin then a cheap domestic ticket at
www.cheapair.com/Spend 2-3 days either end kitesurfing on Ohau.
These days I stay with friends, but best bet for a family is to grab a house at Kailua. Nearly every local hire out rooms or whole houses.
Kailua feels more like a small town on our coast. Waikiki is great to visit but not to stay for a family.
Just grab a car and head over the range to Kailua (about 25min)
You can spend time exploring the island. North Shore is a must to visit. Either big waves (winter) or dead flat for great snorkeling in Shark Bay (summer)

PS: Thinking of getting a stand up from John Armundson in Hawaii for those non-wind days...
