Hey Guys, After your wisdom again.
I'm not a surfer, and have just started having a ball on small waves in the rivermouth on my 11.6 SUP with a leg rope which is just as long as the board. Yeehaa.
Thing is, when I fall off, it's usually off the back, and I kinda fall onto the leg rope and it manages to tangle around me sometimes, which ain't so bad in smallish waves but I can imagine it will hurt when I get game and hit some bigger waves.

The surf shop bloke said its a Knee leg rope, but I wear it around my ankle, as I don't want a white stripe round my knee ruining my tan !! Its a creatures of leasure leggy with a swivel.
Any tips?
Jayne.

Oh Jayne you are so cute !!

I would'nt worry to much about it , My leggie is longer that my board too and Ive surfed lots of over head high waves and never been tangled up and injured or hurt yet.

I had a 12ft leggy on my 10'6 sup when I first bought it and found that it was tangled
not only when falling off but when surfing, carrying the board whenever I looked at it,
so I got rid of it straight away and put on a shorter about 9ft longboard leggy on it and it tangles not nearly as much.
It depends if you want to hang 10 off the nose,if your not into this the leggy doesnt need to be longer than the board but you'll need it long anough that the board wont hit you when ya fall.
See if you can lend a few different lengths and give them a try.
have fun,
Camo.

Just in case it's this easy, but it's on your back foot right?

And as above I'd suggest using a shorter mal leggie. I use an 8' heavy duty bali cord (thicker) and it is still plenty long enough for me to get right up the nose. Knee cords in my opinion aren't all they are cracked up to be and you don't want to ruin that tan!

Jayne, just like you, I'm not a surfer, I use an 11'6 board and a 10 ' leggie, and I used to get tangled up too. Now I don't. Or I probably do, I just don't worry about it now. It just seems to take care of itself. You'll find the same as you improve.

I'm using a 10' leggie on my 11'6" that I attach just below the knee. So far no major dramas with getting tangled, but I guess I tend to fall off one side or another rather than off the back of the board. Falling off the back of the board might be something that happens less as you get more waves and improve your surfing.

As for the knee/ankle attachment, I thought the theory was that the knee attachment offers a bit more comfort when a wave takes the board (as these big boards tend to pack a bit of pulling force when picked up by a wave) but it seems to be a personal choice really.

Not sure if any of that qualifies as wisdom, but just my experience so far...

strap it on tight and whatever ankle it's on - make sure you set it up so the bit that sticks out is pointing to the outside edge of the board - too easy, and if it's tight it shouldn't move too much, maybe on those big wipeouts it will....

You are doing the right thing having it on your ankle dont know about this knee buisness I have never had the problem you are talking about, maybe try jumping to the side when you fall off.
The only problem I ever have is when I stand back up sometimes the legrope is between my back foot and front foot and you have to crouch down and flick it to the back of the board.
Im sure as you get better it will become less of a problem

yeah sounds like you just not falling right. As a beginner there may be a temptation to just kick the board away when you feel like ts getting too heavy or you think you're gonna fall. Try staying on the board even if it nose dives or catches an edge rather than just bailing at the first sign of trouble.

Also dont be afraid to swim a few meters under water when you fall. This puts some distance between you and the board and lets the leggie stretch out and less likely to tangle you. If you fall off the back of your board and try to land next to it to grab the tail or something then its easier to get tangled.

Like anything experience counts. After a while you will instinctively know where to fall so not to get tangled and how to deal with it when you are.

Make sure the stiff bit near the strap is pointing towards the back of the board (off your ankle), therefore the bulk of the cord will be dragging directly behind the board where you don't generally fall (you usually fall at least a little bit to the side).

The fact that you are wearing a knee strap on your ankle may mean that it is not tight enough, spinning around and therefore not pointing in the right direction (as above).

Knee strap legropes (which are actually worn at the top of the calf) are not really suitable for SUP'ing - IMO. They are really designed to not get tangled in your feet when doing cross steps to the nose on a longboard. The problem is that the raised cord (from the deck of the board) makes it very easy to get tangled in your paddle when SUP surfing. Leave them to the prone longboarders and stick with a proper ankle strap for SUP'ing.

Ta Guys - very helpful, I think it's the fact that I don't always wear it on my back foot - well, I rotate the thing from foot to foot so I don't get a white ankle mark! So - will try back foot only. Bugger the tan.

I'm getting a tan on the tops of my feet due to plenty of sup action.
