I have been SUPing for 3 years (surf), never broken a leg rope- until yesterday my FCS snapped. I have had it since I started and it has taken a real hammering so I wasn't too upset (except for the long one-handed swim back to the beach).
Today I attached a Balin leg rope that I have had for about a year and went out in similar conditions to yesterday- busted this one too. 2 leg ropes in 2 days

Do you wait for your leash to snap/break or should you replace it every year to prevent a mishap?

I think it relates directly to how it is used and cared for.
I have a Creatures of Leisure 10' coil that I use on my 12'6" for ocean paddling, it has never been hammered. 2 years.
10' balin I use on my 9'6" All Wave and my 9'1" longboard used regularly and is five years old.
8' Balin use on my 8' gun 8 years old and no signs of wear.

I wash them thoroughly in fresh water after each use and make sure they are dry before they go in my surf box.
Never have wrapped them around my fins. I believe this is a big no no.

I reckon if you buy good quality and look after it they should last a few years at least.

Cheers. ET.

i just got 2 Balin Storm riders with 10mm performance cord. Very cool. I had previous broken a FCS and a Da Kine leg ropes.
They have the look of quality and hopefully they will last

I have broken two already in a period of 6 months. Don't recall their brands, though.
They both snapped in the metalic connections on the board side, after a good hammering.

I snapped 2 in an hour over in Indo this year, both of them about a foot from the board end, I believe because they got caught on the back of the fins whilst getting smashed by big waves.

A good tip when you still have most of the leg rope attached to your leg is to tie the loose end around your paddle just below the handle and just tow it behind you as you swim in using both arms.

I believe they can break at anytime with any brand if they/you end up in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I wish I had thought of this!

My one handed swimming resembled someone drowning and scared the crap out of the wife who was standing on the beach watching my board get smashed all over the place.

Cheers

I have been very lucky with Leggies over the years, except for an incident at G'Land that cost me a brand new short board!! and same as ET I try to rinse most times after a surf.
I do however always buy at least one new one when I go away on an Indo surf trip.
Nothing like having the confidence of new velcro when the surf gets big, and is a small price to pay compared to potentially damaging your board on a reefy, rocky indo beach!
The older ones I then use for smaller local surfs, and always reserve the newer ones for when it gets big.
