i put this moron in the same category as board spearers, tho it could have been an accident, all said and done the guy could have ended up with spine damage, there are better ways to deal with dropins.

That's disgusting. Everybody makes mistakes, everybody has to learn somewhere. That sort of crap doesn't achieve anything except more agro in the water.

I got speared once by a guy flicking his board - not nice. Put a hole in me 2 digits deep, coulda punctured my lung. (I didn't drop in either we we coming towards one another)

I notice he picked on a younger fella as well - real hero.

Matty Boy

That "kook" was probably you once, lotta surfers have short memories. I've seen that video recently on Standupzone, & everyone condemned it. Sterling Spencer is apparently a pro. He should be immediately suspended from the tour indefinitely.
Anyone ever tried that on me they'd be hit with such a massive lawsuit that they'd never be able to afford a board again.
Just my 2c worth. Not obvious is it that I hate aggro in the water Peace guys

To clear the air... thought it was funny clip to show what could happen if you dropped in on someone...

Molly... please get off your high horse mate... one thing you dont know is the back story to this... ie.. how many other times this person has/hasnt dropped in on spencer/other people....

of course i have dropped in on people.. and yes im still a kook... however there are consequences to actions... dont know about WA but there is some localism and agro around the beaches i surf at.. and if you F***up... then you get bashed... but would I sue them?? no way... i F***up...

Please also read the caption below the video... Looks like spence was trying to get over him... however it went wrong....

The two could have also made up in the water after spence took him out...

There are a variety of scenarios that could have been played out before or after this clip... so please dont go judging it basted on 3 seconds of video...

Regardless of the scenarios-you DON'T bust an air with someone paddling in in front of you-just plain arrogant stupidity and fugging dangerous!

That is way out of order.

Well said Molly...

What would have happened if the guy had been hit and seriously injured? An assault charge would be the obvious start.

Just another in the long line of idiots who think that they own the waves. Being a pro makes no difference other than he should be behaving alot better than to do that in the first place.

Of course dropping in is the number one rule not to be broken, but no one has the right to use their board as a weapon to injure another person in the water.

Phew - got that off my chest.

What a complete tool. I would like to see how the "he has been dropping in on me all day" would stand up in court, or worse to the kids parents when they up at the hosiptal. What a moran.

That was my point Matty. Judging by the replies to this thread, you're the only person who "thought it was funny". But I don't want to get into a slanging match. Okay, you may be right, perhaps the pro didn't mean to do it. And if no-one got hurt & it was really just an unintentional accident (although it doesn't look like it) then I could see it appearing on Funniest Home videos or similar.

As for getting "bashed" for unintentionally dropping in on someone...........where's that you surf again Matty? I cut-back onto a longboarder this week as I didn't realise that he had taken off inside me after I had bottom-turned (some people call it snaking). Luckily we both had good reflexes & a collision was avoided. All cool & we had a laugh about it.
Sounds pretty neanderthal where you surf

The guy dropped in. The other guy was already on the wave and moving with a fair amount of speed. He busts the air right as the drop-in guy is getting to his feet. I'm sure he could've avoided the collision by changing his line, but he had set up the move long before the drop-in guy dropped in. Serves drop-in guy right I reckon. As far as I'm concerned it was the air guy's wave and the onus is on other guys to stay off it.

I'd be interested if some loser wanted to take it to court or take up assault charges what the outcome would be. If I blindly or intentionally walk out into traffic and get hit, is that the car's fault or mine for being stupid? I know there have been times I've collided with people dropping in on me - is that assault? Because the alternative is for me to sacrifice myself so the drop-in person doesn't get hit and then I maybe cop a lip on the head and they get away with my wave, no consequences. Should I get them charged for reckless endangerment?

Learn not to drop in and there are no problems.

mollydooka, there's a big difference between dropping in and being snaked.

I'm not writing to say "Call the cops ..." or anything like that and I am seriously not a letigiously minded person ... but ...

If the dropper in was seriously injured or even killed then the other guy would be charged with manslaughter.

Arguably he deliberately flicked his board fins first towards the other guy with the deliberate intent to cause him harm.

There's no way it was accidental unless he is more of a kook than the dropper in. He could have easily gone around the other guy or avoided him without losing the wave.

Hopefully he would be sent to prison where Bubba could take his pleasure with him every night.

Am I missing something??? One sufer deliberately assualts another surfer. What a TOOL Anyone who condones that sort of behaviour is a bigger tool. Bashings??? for dropping in, being a kook....not justified in any circumstance. I couln't give a rats a*#e if he MIGHT have said sorry afterwoods...the intent is pretty clear. Time to give it away if you can't control yourself. Drop the macho ** and enjoy life, it's way too short.

If it's an accident then fine, it's just one of those things that happen. Looking at the video again I can see that it could have been accidental (just goes to show how a title for a video helps to create perceptions.)

If it's deliberate ... off to Bubba with no lube.

BTW On a similar topic there was a fair bit of chat about localism and damage to cars and threats and all that stuff. Again, it's a matter of proportion and the size of the problem. A few rednecks getting grumpy at a few beaches is not really a problem.

If the problem grows to the severity of the assaults happening in Melbourne's night club district then I would expect it to be front page news and armed cops should be patrolling surf breaks on SUPs with blue flashing lights on their heads.

Get of your high horse legion, sure dropping in is bad surf eticate, but putting someone in mortal danger because of, is not on.

"If I blindly or intentionally walk out into traffic and get hit, is that the car's fault or mine for being stupid?"

No, but the driver has a responsibility to try and avoid the pedestrian, not speed up and take him out as you would suggest.

Pathetic argument!

it's no accident, in the slow mo or pause it, he sees him then concentrates on hitting the ramp. he has his exit/landing all worked out. this was rage probably built up over a number of dropins. i'm sure we have all thought about spearing somone when the same guy keeps dropping in, but most of us let sanity prevail

legion , People must be made to behave . If they don't, they know what they're gonna get. I've recently attached a gun rack and bull bar to the front of my board. if I get anyone dropping in on me I they know what they're gonna get. If they're women(and who said they can surf) or children I usually fire a warning shot but it's a real waste of ammo. PS Paddling and aiming is real hard. PPS Legion, keep up the fight!!

For all you neanderthalls promoting violence as a just end to someone elses actions, deliberate or not, read my earlier reply. Oops neanderthalls weren't the sharpest tool in the shed were they so I'd better cut and paste it here..."One sufer deliberately assualts another surfer. What a TOOL Anyone who condones that sort of behaviour is a bigger tool".

Actually no - we have not all thought about spearing someone for dropping in and the very fact that someone would consider it proves that sanity is sorely in question.

Okay so how long is it before we have to start taking out insurance to go supping/surfing/windsurfing or kiting to cover ourselves. I recently surfed a local beach break. In the beginning I had no-one inside me but after a while and a few waves this space got taken up by some boogers and a shortboard. I ended up moving on after catching some more waves cause I was having a few close calls. The reason I moved on was that if I did run into one of them and injure them where would I stand. Unfortunately in todays world some people will sue at the drop of a hat. Does anyone on the Breeze know if you can insure for this sort of situation out of interest.
Cheers

Update:

It appears that both Sterling and the UK tourist are both OK.

Sterling has received serveral death threats and lost sponsors as a result of the stunt. The stunts is also being investigated by the police.

Surfer Magazine that posted the video also appears to have had 100s of subscriptions cancelled.

So I gues Karma is in action.

I have never seen a more pathetic excuse for justification of a potentially leathal act. I agree with double Bubba no lube.

The magazine that tried to glorify it should also be sanctioned IMO.
