Solid team with great results assured ... but why didn't they choose the team based on the Aussie Titles?

I have no particular insight into Surfing Australia's selection criteria but certainly Shakira, Beau Nixon, Angie and Kelly all won national titles so their selection validates the Aussie Titles to some extent.

You do have to feel a little empathy for Beau O'Brian and Karla Gilbert however. In Karla's case, they could only take one woman, and Angie had slightly better overall results with a win in marathon and second in technical so that's fair enough. Likewise, if it had to be a choice between Kelly or Beau, then Kelly had a slightly more consistent weekend.

I thought this may open up a can of worms , for mine Kelly was a shoe in he has been the form paddler all year , Jamie possibly cause he is Jamie!which may be fair enough , beau unlucky for sure.

Agree with the others, how do they choose this? All the guys in the sup surf final absolutely ripped it apart, what about the other 3 guys in the final?

Apart from that, the whole team looks great, very strong indeed!

Had to look up who Lincoln Dews was. Would love to know what results he has to quantify his selection as a prone paddleboarder.

Isnt selection based on winner at nationals plus one wildcard? and in the case of prone its Brads performance at molakai?

There is probly a range of selection criteria for the wildcard spot, not just nationals performance.

Interesting to see how the team goes this year.

Im just bummed they didnt select me. I can beat Jamie anyday

I have no questions about Brad being picked but I don't remember seeing Lincoln in Hawaii (actually never seen him in a paddleboarding race ever). I would consider either Daniel Shade (1st Maui race who beat Gauly), Jackson English (2nd Molokai) or even Zeb Walsh (2nd stock Molokai)

ISA is not running an old fellas category.

That's a shame. I would have loved to seen Goaty frothing it up in Peru!
However they pick it, another strong team again!

It's not through lack of trying , trust me I gave it a big nudge , here's the outcome:-
The ISA is willing to look at it but the first move must be made Surfing Australia and include over the 40' or 50's in the 2013 Aussies Titles , if that happens then it is a big chance in 2014 for the old fellas in the World Titles.

my beef with this is the wildcard
im old school but if you didnt surf or race in the state or national rounds
your out. give the guy or girl who went through the process got a result a chance
they might be the next champion?

based on the idea team members could cross over disciplines to cover in case something happens, its a very good team. jamie cross over- surfing, prone paddle. kelly cross over - prone board ,surfing.lincoln- sup racing, surfing. jordon mercer- sup racing. sharika- sup racing, prone paddle board. angie surfing(yep angie surfs pretty good). justin holland cross over- sup racing, he's done molaki and had some reasonable results

pretty handy all round team

I don't understand. Surfing Australia already ran Over 40s this year. Does that mean Surfing Australia has to make a second first move?

Regarding Lincoln, his inclusion would be around filling a spot in the sup if Kelly or Jamie got sick or injured.
Dont worry, the kid has got a big tick'a and will smash anyone from around the world on a prone.
It makes perfect sense to me!

PS I do feel sorry for Jackson Close:-(

hi, i've been told its always be the aussie winner and a wildcard. you would know that.

i'm just commenting on the team.

maybe that 'pathway' everybody was banging on about has always be a bit misty.

anyway, it's the team and i'll support them

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure Lincoln has done Molokai twice on a paddleboard, once as a 2-man team when he was 14 and again solo at 15!
That, a 12th place finish in the Nutri-grain trials this year (many of the athletes ahead of him may have been ski/swim specialists) and the ability to cross-over to sup if needed makes him a pretty good choice for the selectors.

good on them selecting Lincon , he has had some great results in sup , and as Alley says has some results in the prone stuf too.At the end of the day how many prone paddlers are their too choose from , and he is young and guys like him are the future of the sport , why not give them the experience. If the sup organizations dont get young people involved the sports going backwards. The older blokes like Kelly , Jamie are paving the way for the next generation and the surfing Aus organization should be encouriging the young guys and girls as much as possible.

Sorry this point is lost on me. Does SUP results warrant prone paddleboard inclusion or vice versa. The inclusion of the best possible team to represent Australia should be on result/s not possibility. Kelly was picked his results as was others. Is this the best possible team. I don't think so. Does someone tell Kelly Slater just because he has had more birthdays than anyone else on tour that he should not win. When the picking of teams aren't transparent than there is an issue.

The question you ask about how many prone paddlers are there to choose from (probably a couple of hundred)

Sorry that was wrong , Surfing Australia have to do the leg work work with the ISA and ask for it to be included in the 2014 world titles . Surfing Australia considered this years over 40's as a test.

@dudley78, in regards to Lincoln. He has done Molokai prone as mentioned before, twice teams (I think) and once solo, each time prone. His solo crossing was last year, came 4th Age div and inside the top 20 overall. He has also been around the Clubbie scene for a while and up the pointy end of the field in his age group. I pretty sure he has made State SLSQ teams. He's a gun board paddler and has done pretty well crossing over into the SUP stuff. He didn't do Molokai this year as he was more focused on the shorter BOP/sprint style racing. Answer to the other question, why weren't the other place getters from Molokai Prone on the team? Perhaps they were asked, but couldn't make it. I understand thats how it was done last year, and perhaps they wanted some younger crew in the team.
