Hi all. I'm just another noob looking to explore another ocean hobby. I know beginner threads must get annoying, but I'm just looking for some opinions without money being involved.

Basically I'm looking at getting a sup. Surprise surprise right?.. I live on the north side of brissy so I'll predominantly be paddling flat-water, with say the tiniest tiniest little bit of surf whenever I get up the coast.

So I'm unsure if I should go with one of those pointy nose beasts, or one of those longboard looking boards. Any suggestions or even board suggestions. I do like the look of the NAISH Nalu boards. They also seem to have a decent fan base.

I know of a couple of stores close by that stock SUP's. Kite Power, Briskites, Surf connect and even goodtime. Anymore suggestions of stores, or even stores to stay away from (you can pm that information if it's against forum rules).

Also just a quickie. Roughly how heavy is the AVERAGE sup?

Also Also. Wood over AST, worth the extra moolah?

Edit: Im also 100kg. I've cut the banana cake out, so I'm on my way down to 85ish.

Ha-ha you guys are going to hate me

Take care,
Some annoying random guy.

Your weight would be a good place to start, this will determine the size of board you need,

Personally, I started out with a 10'6 Fanatic Fly, did the cruisey lake and flat stuff pretty well, as well as got me started in the waves, its great for small surf up to a couple of feet,

Also has the ability to load it up with a sailing rig for windsurfing,

I have riden the Naish Mana's, they are great boards, I found them to be a bit on the heavy side,

I like banana bread

I'm currently 100kg or 220 pounds. I am on my way down to about 85kg though.

Obliviously too much cake makes you a fatty like myself.

demo demo demo if your buying a new board demo as many as you can...

see its not just about weight .. skill has play as well...so demo

i went for a starboard whopper 34 wide when starting out because i wanted to progress and not get the ****s...within six months i sold it for something 29 wide.

Not that the whopper is a bad board they rock. i would suggest looking for one it would be perfect.

shops and this site have second hand too so buy a board cheap use it and move it to a new one once you work out what you want to surf i reckon...

the coreban web site has heaps of vids... i found them helpful

banana cake is awesome dont stop eating it just get a sup and burn it off!

seriously any' brand' board 10 1/2 foot range, a bit of width and thickness will do the job for a first board.. those kind of boards are made to do the job for you

Hippy?? I'd like to think I'm more of Neo-Nazi white supremacy type ..

Alright. So my very fast bicycle has just sold. So I've got some decent Mollah to spend….. On banana cake.

In all seriousness I've takin everything on board. Demo demo demo seems to be the motto. I'll shop around, see what shops are keen on letting me demo half there stock.

AST over wood, or wood over AST for a beginner?

I shall report back when I find something I like.

Take care
Cheers

Are you coming from a surfing background and have good balance? If so, go narrower than what previous posters are recommending. A bit more volume will give you bouyancy. My shop dealer recommended at least 2L for every kilogram. I'm 85kg and bought an 11'6" Naish Nalu. Love the board and I'm catching the tiniest of waves and paddles very nicely downwind. If anything there is just a bit too much volume for my weight but would work well at someone of 100+ kilos.

I always tell people to go long and wide, the extra glide you get is just awesome. I was on a 10th mana which was frickin awesome I have been on an 11-2 starboard for the last year and it's an awesome board. I use it in the surf, which can be less than knee high through to well overhead, I paddle on Lake Burley Griffin for fitness and also use the board for sailboarding. To me a good SUP is a perfect one board solution.

Get rid of the cake, it drops too many crumbs on the couch. Just finished half a family block of chocolate. Only problem is I have chocolate on my fingers and it's all over the iPad. I'm 125kgs and I ride 17 glide down to 8'11. I say get 11'6 to 12'6 all rounder that let's you get out on the water in all conditions. Enjoy it now and before long you will have a garage full like the rest of us.
Now where's the rest of that chocolate.

Meh to be honest I think AST would do the job its light and robust. Go the longboard shape to I reckon they are significantly more stable. Having said all that I have a 7-10 to sell lmao
