Went to see the latest Tim Bonython surf movie "immersion" last night at the Espy, showing some of the world's biggest and gnarliest surf with the Nathan Fletcher Chopes most "hugest" wave ridden, effyn mad and breathtaking to say the least.
The Movies theme was one ocean shared by all surfers riding a variety of equipment, beautifully shot often showing waves from different angles with commentary from the contemporaries of the modern surfing era, everyone's hooked on surfing, it was a great movie to watch on the big screen.
Loved it as with just about every surf movie I have seen, there was however a sequence of Sup boarding which left me somewhat disappointed.
We all know that the tie in with nature is what Surf is about , to me it was overplayed with the Sup shots, the movie went from grinding big barrels to a sup rider in the sunset followed by admittedly some great shots of Tahiti sup but also showed the incident of the Drop in with the chap at chopes, followed by howls of scorne in the crowd at the Espy.
Supboarding seen in a negative light, maybe I am oversensitive but..
The are some pretty good examples of Sup Surfing around but what I saw in the movie, some seemed lame in comparison with other forms of surfing.
Anyway if you get to see the movie, it was really, really good and Tim Bonython not only made a great film but has some great surf stories to tell as he presented the film last night, bloody good..
