Hi Guys off to bali on Monday and wondered what sort of camera to purchase for sup, and for not too deep diving or snorkeling.
I have looked at the Go Pro surf Hero and Olympus 8000 .
Can you guys help me make my mind as I don't have much time left before we go .
Cheers Dolla

I've got the olympus tough and its pretty good also got a housing for it so if i want to go deeper i can. i have the go pro at the shop and is a good camera for taking out on your board and stuff like that but i would not use it as my every day camera.

I've got one of the original model Olympus "tough" cameras (not sure what model number) and its pretty good for taking out in the water and taking some nice happy snaps - don't expect super fantastic quality. Its got a motor drive which can take up to 15-20 frame sequences and the video quality isn't too bad for the type of camera. Its really easy to just slip down the neck of my wetsuit where its safe and snug and i've never had an issue with the waterproofing or any of those areas. Some of the newer ones are only rated to 3m, but the model I own is rated to 10m (and I still think they make a model which does) which was great for snorkelling.

All in all the practicality of the camera for water/snow use outweighs some of its technical flaws, so i'd recommend it

G'Day Dolla,
I've been using the Lumix FT1 Panasonic waterproof, shockproof camera. Also can stash it down the front of my wetsuit and mainly use it on video function which can use the zoom with so not bad for a small digital camera. They retail for around $520.00.Here's a link to a short vid I posted in for you to check out the footage and see what you think.

I'm getting one Cammo. Good old tax return!
It is the only pocket digi that films in HD with a zoom function let alone being water and shock proof as well. Very nice camera. Duty free too should make it a bit cheaper!

Hi,

Do all cameras have to be board mounted in this way? or is there a paddle mount option etc. I see DJs set up here but its the only one i have seen. Is there other options. Photos would be great, I see on the forum/shop here there is a kite mount but i dont think it would be small enough for thr shaft.

DJ,

Is that single float buoyant enough to float the whole rig?

Bit late to help Dolla, sorry mate, but just found an interesting review/comparison of waterproof cameras.

The Lumix gets a good write up.

This seems to be the most popular way of holding the camera? I went to all sorts of shops to find the bits but could not.

But when i say all sorts of shops i mean i went into 2 the wife wants to head into 22 so inbetween the new seasions womans wear and what have you I did not realy get a good chance to have a gander at this products

But while being forced to have my opinion forced onto me by my wife buy always asking does my ass look big in these .. Are they too tight etc etc

I asked myself would one of these dent pullers be that good for the board eg, May pull away from the foam As the puller must grab the deck and suck it upwards somewhat. ??

I have been looking into the go pro surf camera and i like it. mainly because of the sticky pad which i presume can be used just once ?

Is this a new product or been round a while. if you have one that you are upgrading or looking at something else i would be keen to buy a used one.

Yes it does float it.. btw.. It's a float from a water skiing shop.

I've used a waterproof housing for my little Canon point and shoot camera and that worked ok but it's pretty bulky.

I like the little Olympus because I can use it for hand held pics like this out on the water.. It's an Olympus 1030 SW and takes great shots.

I can also mount it like this and it's a little less bulky than the waterproof housing but still bulky compared to a GoPro.

Paul.. I can't imagine these dent pullers doing any damage to the board from the sucker force.. These boards are pretty tough..

The other day I bought a GoPro camera from SHQ.. Waa-Hoo!!

It's taken me the last couple of days to get it out of the packaging.. .. Jeez they make it hard don't they?

Or is it just me?..

yes your right DJ some packaging is real hard i purchased cable the other day and i could not open it at all, I then tried the scissors and broke the handle.

Then all that was left was a butchers knife it worked but i was rather puffed.

Item was $30 cable was crap but i guess the $25 packet was worth it

How much did you pay for the Go Pro

Ohhh and hows my demo leash comming along

I have looked into the Go pro wide camera, Now my problem is everything i read of come up with myself does suggest even if the camera does more or less 1hr of video the batteries wont do one hour of video.

A comment i had was the 2 batt will last for aprox 10 min of video.

How can this be?

If i am somewhat right in my comments the the Gopro is a little missleading in what is advertises.

Now i dont have a Gopro but want one, But if i am changing batteries every 10min what would be the point.

Any clarification would be great.

Paul,
The new GoPro HD will have heaps more battery life, so it might be worth waiting on these to come available.....It's supposed to have 2-3 hours of battery life.
Cheers, Ronnie
