Hi,

I am thinking of purchasing a set of Future JM Tri Fins, when I looked at a set they looked like a large fin, not sure if this is because I am used to shortboard fins.

Wondering if anyone used these fins and has some feedback on their performance?

I am wanting to use the fins in a PSH 89 wide ripper, I weigh 78kg.

Thanks

I've used them on a demo board...not sure if it was the board or the fins, but the performance was definitely above-average!

I looked at JM's but seemed over size for local conditions - I bought a stamp quad set for 8'9 wr PSH (cheers AA for recommendation) until one rear broke off worked a treat - got my merrick biscuit short board fin as the centre now running as a thruster and its great fun -

I just pop the stock centre fin in if it's a bit meatier -I'm 87 Kgs but probably should be a little lighter

These fins are great as a thruster set up providing your board has its fin box far enough towards the tail. A lot of production boards have the box too far forward to run as an effective thruster set up.

Thanks CMC, I have noticed in a lot of videos, guys riding PSH rippers have their centre fin almost at the rear of the fin box, should I start off with at the back of the fin box?

I would. The point I was trying to make though is that many boxes are installed in relation to the side fins as a Longboard styled 2+1 (big rear, small sides with the front of the back fin close the back of the sides).

This does not make great fin positioning for a smaller thruster set up with equal sized fins. Personally I was of the impression you needed huge fins in a SUP as a thruster, the reality was that until I had a chance to dictate where I wanted the box I was compensating for having the back fin too far forward with big fins.

So start in the back and see what happens, to work as a thruster fins need space between them. Take a look at any shortboard for the best comparison.

Usual fin positioning on a shorty is 3-3 1/2" tail fin and 11-11 1/4 fronts. On SUP to match that positioning it is more like 6" tail and 15" fronts. Many boxes I have seen only allow the back fin to go back to 8 or 9" from the tail. Add a 5" fin base in this and you only have 2" in between the fins. Boards will just wiggle not drive like this unless you add a big back fin.

I had a look at my board, I can just get the 6" from the tail, I will give it ago and see what happens. I have ridden short boards for 30 odd years and have never played around with fin placement, so I have limited knowledge!

Thanks again for the advice, much appreciated.
