I hope you guys and anyone else on the Sunny coast are available this Saturday morning because I'll be up there to run the first session and give a full introduction to the program. Meeting at cotton tree jetty at 5.30am. Hope to see you there.

All you boys are doing really good aready and things like this can only help but the one thing I would say is try and find someone who wants to stand up and be coach so they can push you when you need it! One of the biggest helps I have had is having someone like pete there to push us when sometimes I would have taken it easy. it's hard to be coach and push everyone else at the same time I know because that's how we ran our stuff for a long time and you guy have some great paddlers up there who I'm sure would love to push you along!! Maybe someone like Woogie could be the pusher?

Agree with Jacko, Woogies d man.
They reckon once you start charging a fee you get more turn up.
Happy to pay a good coach.

Totally agree with Healdy and Jacko. It is so easy to stay in bed when its free.

Also imagine telling Woogie I stayed home cause I felt like a sleep in.

Kelly and Mick di Betta run our training squad at Currumbin. It has always been free and usually there are between 12-20 who turn up almost every morning. It's a great group ranging from elite athletes to us amateurs. We all get an enormous amount from the world class experience in coaching and competing these guys offer us and push each other to our own limits. I personally don't feel as though I need to be paying to get out of bed in the morning but know if I miss a session I feel like I have really missed out and that the other crew will have one up on me. It feels more like a group of mates than any kind of business. In saying that I wouldn't begrudge anyone charging for teaching there knowledge and would be more than happy to pay for what Kelly and Mick so generously give.

True points and you are very lucky to have the likes of Mick and Kelly. They can move up this way to the quieter life anytime. Will even store Kelly's boards in my shed for him

I used to own an event management company and always found we had higher attendance for event we charged a small fee for compared to the events that were free entry. Don't ask me why?

We had a small free training group here for a while and it had a regular crew of 5 or 6 who turned up all the time. We also hold a free time trial each week that is well supported.

Experience like your coaches in both groups is hard to come by if we had someone like them or Woogie that wanted to start it up up here I would happily pay if it was in budget with the boss.

Not saying it is right or wrong to charge. I personally would be happy to pay as I paid my swim coaches all my competitive life and was paid as a swim coach for years. When I was no longer training it was good to earn some money for getting up at 4:30am to train others.

It is great also if people are happy to do it for free as well, as the divergence of society benefits from both models.

I personally tend to be more committed when i have a financial transaction though this does not mean everyone has to be the same.

You guys at the Goldie are lucky to have two excellent choices

I agree with most of the above , although i like the idea of a bunch of people getting togeather to help each other improve just for the fun of it. certainly dont begrudge any one that wants to charge for their specialist knowledge though.

I see you revised your post ??????

Is that the same for:

Swimmers that pay a swimming Coach.
Athletics Competitors paying athletics coaches
Boxers paying for coaching.
Etc Etc Etc .......
Why is paddling different. Silly comment

Yes everyone does extra sessions for free in groups or own time. To say that to pay for expert advice for this sport training is wrong is wrong!

To be additionally motivated due to a commitment made financially is also not wrong. A group motivates each other and yes as said by others you sometimes get more there if a small fee is charged...... Not saying it is needed but does happen. When a group is established it does self motivate.

Kelly and Mick do a great job and are very motivational. As stated this is great and would be great if they were here. Having said this I and others would be happy to pay a small monthly fee for coaching etc.

Very singular and antagonistic view to say in this sport beyond all others we should all be the same, feel the same, train the same and be motivated the same way.

Just Saying
Now back to report cards. 250 to go.....

swanie, i was one of the starters in this nearly three years ago so i think i know the group reasonably well. it was kelly, dale, cmc, mick and myself back then, but it grew quickly.

as i said i would pay no problems, but it's no a business type thing, its more about a group of mates and liked minded paddlers getting together because we love what we do.

its tough training, a commitment and rewarding

if you need to pay before hand to make yourself go there, chances are its not the right mindset.

refer to ragers post

cheers

If money motivates u on any level u need to do some self assessment.

The lake is free and has grown heaps with lots of regulars too.

Besides, if its a free group you guys can enjoy my company as we can't all afford personal trainers.

I don't think the mindset of the athlete that pays for coaching is less then that that does not.

I would be happy to pay for expert advice in training in this sport if there was someone wanting to coach a group who has the right background and expertise.

I am not saying there is a 'need' for me to pay to stay motivated but when there is a small fee, training groups in any sport often have more regular attendance. Just is what it is. Also what works for some should not be knocked by others. Difference is the beauty of being. Does not mean they are training for the wrong reasons.

I have been intrinsically motivated to organise and participate in training session, time trials and events on the Sunshine Coast for years. Never miss it and no financial gain.

I paddle because I enjoy it and it keeps me relatively fit. No more no less. No illusions of grandeur.

Just saying it is not wrong to pay or have free sessions. And agreeing with other that sometimes in some activities you do get better attendance when there is a fee. I have had this in business.
Not saying this applies to all groups as personalities like your crew and coaches with their expert knowledge can motivate people to attend. What your crew does is great and I am not knocking it or referring to it.

Now back to the last 200 report cards. Gee they make me happy

And Rusty... Your studying chemical engineering cause it pulls all the chicks????

I'm studying chem eng cause its a challenge that keeps me thinking, don't care about the money. Hence my previous career in marine. Engineering degrees completely change how u see the world, changed my life!

The only reason it would appear that paid groups have greater attendance, would be the initial assumption people make that they offer more because its costing them something.

Or maybe people want that extra bit of coaching and want to pay for somebody's skill that they have learnt over many years. I'm sure you can stand there and throw a punch anytime but if you want to learn how to box you go and pay someone to teach you. I can tell you know one is rolling in money teaching sup yet but if someone is standing there teaching you their skills then it should have a price.
But hey some will pay and some will not some will improve and some will not!! It's all part of life I guess.

How can someone offering to give some tips to a group of people that may or may not assist them now cycle into a total shiz fight about the pros and cons of paying for coaching or not. Total intention of the offer has now been lost and buried under a whole lot of proverbial bull.......

and BTW, it's absolute crap to believe that you have to pay to improve.

Is a gym free? Is a personal trainer free?
The answer is NO, I love having someone there to push me and correct me quickly if they see me doing something incorrectly with stroke tech or push me harder when I could easily go light.
So for me paying for coaching is the normally and I have done this all my life.
I myself a PT aswell don't train anyone for free.
My thoughts anyways.
