Definately looks like a racing yacht design though. I'm pretty sure from what I've read or understood DJ is that Laird is going to design a SUP with them as well as having the Puma yacht racing team pin point large swell during there race, calling in Laird so he can try and surf the largest waves possible around the globe.

Imagine the emails from Laird... , to say Puma...

......
I've got an offer from "......", and an offer from "....." and they have added "....." thousands to that, plus all flights, accomm, and expenses. So if you can match that, plus "......" thousand, plus my selection on the R&D team, their expenses and wages, and Dad (Billy) gets "......" percent on top of that.... Then I'm in.
......

I mean that with sincerity !! Just write your own cheques Laird !! Or Checks in America !

I like any new innovations and am open minded about this one too. There is obviously a lot of modern yacht design in this and if the first model does not work they will keep on modifying things until it does.

Many of the modern displacement/semi-displacement SUP nose designs that have come out in the last year or so were inspired by the Americas Cup hull designs. The tail section is now the next piece to be changed so dramatically. At least it should be pretty stable.

Or the emails from Puma to Laird:

Dear Laird,

As the CEO of Puma, I would like to present to you an offer of $5--k to do f--- all.
In return you will be required to be involved in various photo shoots in exotic locations around the globe. Also you will be required to participate in what you love most - sup/surfing.

Would'nt you take it ?

I think it's more the other way round.

I think Laird has been hired to motivate and train the crew.. and as a part of him joining the crew I think this whole SUP thing is just a bit of fun.. I may be wrong.

Here's the full reason DJ, from the Puma website:

Big wave surfer, co-inventor of Tow-In-Surfing, and father of modern day paddleboarding, Laird Hamilton sees himself as a “throw back” to the time when surfers prided themselves on being an all-around waterman. He learned to surf by age 3 and has spent his career pioneering a crossover between board sports. Hell bent on living life to the extreme, Laird's latest endeavor takes surfing back to its roots with stand up paddleboarding.

“It's been a life-long goal to push boundaries and find rogue waves at sea to ride,” says Laird. “When PUMA Ocean Racing approached me with ideas for how we might collectively make this happen during the Volvo Ocean Race, I was thrilled.”

Laird will serve as the team's honorary 12th member. The crew will track wave patterns while sailing through the remotest reaches of the world's oceans. As monster waves are found, Laird will fly in, prepared to surf.

Laird and PUMA have also collaborated on a line of limited edition carbon fiber stand up paddleboards which takes inspiration from the Mar Mostro Volvo Open 70 hull. “We're bringing the ultimate innovation to action water sports,” he says. “It's going to be a game-changer.”

Thanks.. It will be interesting to see what happens.. Maybe they'll sail out to places like Cortes banks when it's too big for a normal boat?

I don't think they are going to get too close to a breaking wave in a 10 million dollar 70 foot boat.

I'd like to hear about the reasoning behind the design and what they are looking to achieve e.g. greater stability for bigger guys, less tail drag/turbulance during peak paddling, this could be endless, but the possibility to spend a lot of money that could be used on research to advance the sport.
