Very quick times, looks like the Sunny Coast will dominate the Ke Nalu Supfest in Adelaide!!!

I did a few conversions to kph for anyone interested. I also ran some percentages as the time for the 12'6 starby was real close to the 14' starby.

Conversions for the top 10 places, with the fastest at the top.

13.85 kph
13.58 kph
13.33 kph
12.63 kph
12.20 kph
11.80 kph
11.43kph
11.43 kph
11.25 kph
11.25 kph

Using 9.3 kph as the base line for a 14 foot boards potential hull speed and 8.9 kph as the 12'6 potential hull speed.

13.85 kph converts to 1.6714 over hull speed, very fast board, even with an elite paddler.
13.58 kph converts to 1.6553 over hull speed, very close to the 14'speed.

A 14' board is approximately 4.49% faster than a 12'6 board

The difference between the Starby 14' and the Starby 12'6 board is 1.16% of actual hull speed calculated from the above data sets.
The starby 14' should be 4.49% faster than the Starby 12'6, not a low 1.16% faster.

So this shows us that the Starby 12'6 board has a faster hull shape than the Starby 14' board.

The Lahui Kai did 9.93 kph which is over hull speed

This is the link to the speed calculator that I used www.unitarium.com/speed-calculator

Thats a lot of numbers...one thing that i think comes out of it it there are some serious advantages in craft. I punted out the 23.5 LE, 26 LE, 26 Jav, 2014 x24 sprint.

If u really want to be competative and your at the pointy end of speeds. Boards make a big difference. fullstop.

It will be very interesting to see when we run the 500m if the same diff in board speeds are seen, to the same degree... or even more so, as it will be hard to muscle a slow boardon the plane for 500m...

its a real eye opener for me. id encourage other manufacturers to get their fast flat water boards to the next session, im happy to punt any board down course with unbiased effort.

What was the water like with a 10knot easterly on it?
Thats a great course you guys have up there, professionally laid out like it is.

Is there much of a tidal current?

I put a 12'6 x 27.5 in wide over the full 4.2klm course in August last year, there was a ESE around 10 to 12kts dirty choppy water and headwind up the course. The board still did well I thought at 8.96kph, just over hull speed with only one run and a first time paddler.

It is avery good testing ground for flat water Sprinter boards.

We ran 1 at a time, in lane 2. it was fairly protected, and only running 1 at a time allows everyone the same conditions. There is no current. cant wait to do 500m.

What about the water depth, is it a constant depth of over 2 metre?
We have our little spot down here, its only 200mtr, but it is deep water at high and low tide.
The other course is only a high tide run because when the tide drops the speed goes down.
The chanel starts off ok but then shoals rapidly and you feell that some one has grabbed a hold of the tail of your board.

It's an Olympic course. Apparently kayak worlds will be held there in 2016. It flushes with the tide but has a wier so only fills on a really high tide and would barely have a head difference of a foot maximum.

What do you mean by hull speed and where did you get those numbers?

Hey boardbumps, the regatta area of the lake was designed with a constant depth of 4.5m - so even with some sediment build up over time, shoaling isn't a factor there.

Also, I'm pretty sure that in addition to the infrequent tidal exchange, the lake has a pumped inflow (for 12-20hr/day) from the Mooloolah River system connecting to its northern end, and corresponding continuous discharge into Currimundi Lake to its south to ensure there is sufficient flow circulating through it to maintain water quality and prevent water from becoming stagnant, outbreak of algal blooms and probably assists in biting midge & mosquito control too.

But this flow rate is very low in comparison to the overall lake volume, so is unlikely to have a huge impact on paddling times. The lake is very open and exposed so even a light wind (say 5-7knots) would have more influence on recorded times than the base flow on most days.

Nonetheless, on a dead calm/glassy day (very rare in the afternoon) it would be interesting to run sprints in both directions and see how times compare/average across the field.
