From my limited experience, Don't.
Go over the falls with a SUP and there is a good chance of wearing it.
Then you can post images of your horrendous injuries like the other blokes do.

Last Sunday I took off on a more than double over head left hander, take off was steep but ok, did a bottom turn then cut back into the edge of the wash, but as i turned back to the face for the next section i knew was coming i found i didn't have enough speed, i got stalled back up on the lip and went down with a closing section, the board and i dropped, and as i got to the bottom my board turned and i landed on the rail just above my coxic bone (the one in the crack of your bum) lucky i have some padding but i am still quite sore and find it hard to sit in the one spot for long without it aching.
Thinking about it i realize my mistake, when i got stalled i panicked and tried to back away from the situation which placed too much weight on the back foot, i think what i should have done is lean slightly forward and put the rail into the wave which would have either helped me make it or i might fall off to the side.
When i think about it, i can still see the edge of the board i landed on and can only imagine the damage it may have done if the board had rotated more and i landed on a fin, i would say it would be a trip to the hospital.
My advice; dont back out and dont make mistakes.

I reackon an important thing is also Angled not straight = instant acceleration - doesnt matter which way unless its a big close out - late and straight is asking for trouble - not sure about paddle hard if its late enough ya only need one or two to get you on it - late drops back into the peak with and a sliding face turn are such a good feeling - dependant on what wave your surfing of course

get your back foot back over the fins before the wave comes, take off on an angle and go hard.

My advice if you are forced into a late take off you are still on your feet , unless it's shallow break or reef you ride to the grave , while you are still on your feet you have a chance. Take the extra stroke and drop back don't bail until you are gone.
