just a quick question from a newbie SUP'per...

why place a leash up under your knee? is it a style/comfort thing or are there 'real' benefits?

hi mate
not really a much of a difference, it is more what style of sup your into, people who use more long board style boards and surf like that may choose to wear knee leggies as they might walk around or noseride and it keeps it out of the way of your feet a little more, some people also use this stle for downwinding because they move around, i dont like these legies in big surf. ankle leashes are better for more shortboard style where you more plant your feet, i find these better in bigger surf, this is more just a guide people use whatever they like after all it doesnt have to be for any of the above reasons it could just be a preferance, hope this helps

IMO.. there are real benefits in using a knee cuff unless you like standing on or tripping on your leggie.. In med to large surf I switch to an ankle cuff because I don't like the pull on my knee.

only problem with the knee cuff is if you are kneeling on your board a lot when starting out you can cop some decent rash!!!!!

Good point.. If you do a lot of kneeling you won't like the knee cuff.

Personally, I have to say I love the ankle leash.

It might be different for flatwater paddlers but I find that I catch my paddle on the knee leash and it drives me mad!

On the ankle and short thick leggies , one kick of the leg and your board is back , you don't need to wind it in. A quick recovery of the board is the difference to getting out or getting smashed for the next 15 mins.

Get to your feet fast or throw the paddle under your guts and paddle like hell , knees are your last option.

IMHO.

I got smashed at solid Johanna last year with an ankle cuff and it wrecked the cartilage in my knee, wrenched it sideways while I was underwater - so I wear a knee cuff above the knee now. I might look like a kook, but I have no probs with the knees. Have used it like this in 6-8ft surf with no probs. Though I reckon Piros is right - if you can go shorter go for it.

What about waist um.... leggie wastie??

Check out this great video Beasho posted on the Zone. Seems that it would avoid possible damage to your knee. Anyone tried it out?

Great video JC. Nice to see how SUPpers can share a wave.
Was looking at my old retractable kite board leash the other day, this could be a solution also to stop standing on a leash when stepping back. I hated a knee cuff, just felt wrong for me.

Yeah I think a coil waist leash would be good for racing. Haven't seen one in a store here. Maybe DJ could use his considerable influence to have Balin make one.

Will do.. I was thinking the same thing for a while now.. I actually have one that Balin made for me but I have not used it yet.. It's the half straight/half coiled but it has the rail saver at each end so I can use the second rail saver to attach to a belt or bumbag.. I'm sure they could make a complete thing but I've been thinking about it or a while and wondering if the belt could use those plastic clip together buckles or would they pull apart under load.. Or a double D ring system like a motorcycle helmet.. I wanted to get that idea sorted before getting/asking Balin to make something.

Yep and it works well. Used a similar type of thing in a race on the sunny coast last year. You can attach the ankle strap to the handle on your board and put one lightweight aluminium carabina through the rail saver which can be easily attached to another one hanging off a waist bag. Super quick to take on and off and keeps it out of the road of your feet.

The Americans were talking about a quick release waist leash suitable for rivers. I wonder what that one is all about. Assume it's not velcro.

I always thought the knee leggies were for the old buys who couldn't reach their ankles (me included).

i have been getting the worst pain under my left ribs at work sometimes, especially after smoko where we find anything to sit on. must have been that slumped position.

anyway its was driving me insane. felt like i was having a heart attack or something.

then i figured it out. its from prone paddling with my starboard paddle under my ribs. its not comfortable for me with my paddle no matter where i put it and i'm thinking then i take a few foam hits i lift up then land back down on the paddle. i must be bruising my last rib

for me, just saying, i'll go back to kneeing when i have too.

DJ I think the trouble with the double D ring would be releasing the belt in an emergency, unless there was a quick release on the leash itself. I can imagine in the surf the leash would end up behind you and would be just about impossible to release if you had to reach around your back. I've made a quick release leash for my ski that attaches to the side of my pfd, the nice thing about that is the fact that the quick release is always in the same spot. I used one of these snap shackles with a ball on the end of some rope for the release.

I guess if the attachment of the leash onto the belt was just a loop of some kind it could slide around and hopefully the buckle for the belt would always be in front of you and accessible. Pretty sure Murphy is going to move it when you need it though!

The 50mm side release buckles for webbing aren't rated but we did tests on them for some slings we made at work years ago, they broke somewhere around 150kg of load. Probably if you were getting that much load having it break and release might not be such a bad thing!

Juddy my two cents worth. Definitely calf for me on both SUP and longboard. if you walk or even move around on your board an ankle strap can often have the legrope under your feet, this can be very annoying and takes your concentration away from the task at hand. I have never had issues with calf straps as they suit me. But again it comes down to a personal choice and what works best for you. Though asking questions in this forum and the amount of varied answers you get gives you plenty too think about. ET.
