Just starting a new or extended topic off "any advice on what to do when caught by a big set?"

Any other experiences on this, I always thought leg ropes were too long?

I agree with Piros. Shorter is better. Just be aware they come back to (at) you quicker after a wipe out. But thats an advantage, as long as you don't let it hit you.

Short board = short leg rope

Longboard = long leg rope

The only reason for the long leg rope is so you can walk the board.

Warwickl,
my advice is to never wear a leg rope shorter than the board you are riding. Every now and then I'll see someone with a short leggie where they will fall over the nose of their board, swiftly followed by the tail making a b-line for their head. Needless to hospital is normally the next stop.

A shorter leggie will be placed under greater stress more often than a longer rope, therefor rendering it more likely to fail when you really need it.

If I am using a leggie, I tend to use one no shorter than the board in small waves and at least a foot or three longer in large waves.
Best of luck.

I took note of those comments on the other thread and must admit, I was in some trouble last weekend (long leggie), couldn't get through the beach break (picked a pretty rough patch to sup to be honest) and after about 10mins of trying to push through the sets, I was struggling to get the board back in time...so I called it quits & went out later that day in a safer (smaller) spot. I'll stick with the long leggie (board length), but will chose my surfing spots a bit better next time.
