I'm going through a lot of leg ropes. Lucky if I get two sessions per leg rope at the moment. I've tried a few different brands, but no real standouts.
Given how big sups are, they pull like a fourteen year old boy. I figure regular leggies just aren't up to the task
Suggestions anyone?

Hi Brady
Using anything under 8mm thick will probably result in a lot of swimming. I use Creatures (Wiamea) but I think there are plenty of other good ones out there.

Hi Brady, Where are they breaking, swivel or along the length? I used to break heaps of legropes too. I stopped winding the legrope around the fins which I reckon was putting tiny cuts into the material each time. I now take the legrope off the board after each surf. I can say since I have been doing this I haven't broken a rope for years.

Brady, I'm with Div. Don't wrap your leggie around anything, particularly around you fins. Take it off after a surf. When you get home rinse it in fresh water and coil it up for storage. Never broken one that was the correct size for the board and surf i was in or on.

After snapping a legrope last week I was asking the same question. There's a really good thread about it already

Hi Brady

Have been using a Creatures 9mm Legrope 4-6days a week, for just over 12 months. Has not snapped as yet so it must be good.

Well you've definately got something to look forward to then. Broke a Da Kine SUP 12 footer - snapped at the swivel plastic connection on a 4 foot close out while paddling out - last line of sets in the worlds most gutless waves - absolutely loved the long swim with paddle against the rip and current - can't wait to do it again - enjoyed the lift in the rubber ducky though.

Hope the new Creatures one holds out as that swim hangin on to a paddle scarred me for life

What div said is spot on!

The other point is if you go up in legrope size to 10 or 12 mm be aware you are going to lenghten your leg if you get caught in serious white water.

Wrap mine on the front of the fin so no cuts

Creatures outer reef 10 or 12 foot never snapped one yet. Still trying though

One leg is longer than the other and my nostrils flare a little more than they used to

Do not wash stuff in fresh water promotes mould and mildew. Wtf would you wash a leggie?

If the leashes are giving at the swivel, learn to tie a knot straight onto the cord. I am not sure whether any brands actually use this knot anymore? Still, you can cheat a bit more life out of the legrope if you can get the hang of it.

Top advice Jacko the more you use your paddle as a break to stop getting pulled back the more pressure goes on your leggie.

Keep your leggies short and thick to avoid the tomb stone , the longer leggies lets your board get sucked back into the foam ball and that lets the board stand up and get seriously stretched , once this happens you'll notice it's a lot longer and thinner, after that it's only a matter of time before they pop at your ankle.

As SurfershaneA says learn to tie a bowline through your ankle strap they will last many more sessions after they break. The compression connection to the swivel is the weak point in all leggies , but never hang onto it.

Thanks for the feedback guys

They are breaking at the point where they attach to the swivel near my ankle. I have re-used a couple of them by tying it back on to the ankle strap. Then they have a tendency to cut into my ankle a bit, and I end up pretty sore.

The advice for a short leggie makes sense - breaking strain is less in a longer rope. But when I've used a short leggie I've found the board coming back and hitting me in the head sometimes.

I never wrap around my fins - just stuff it loose into the board bag

I have been fighting being dragged - basically because I don't want to have to work too hard getting back out the back again. I might have to change my approach.
