Like I have said elsewhere, absolute GOLD! I so appreciate what Dave has to say, especially that surfing is about STYLE!

Maybe I was lucky enough to start surfing at the end of the single fin era when I was privileged enough to surf with a local crew who pushed the point? I can clearly remember as a kid having an older surfer who had been passed a Gerry Lopez singlefin via Peter McCabe scorn me for not waxing my single to the nose. Like a respectful grommet, I listened!

As some might have noticed, I am also a big advocate of what Dave says about the need for SUP surfing to differentiate itself from the WSL. The sweet reward I find from following this advice and other tips like paddle use and carving is when I put it all into action prone surfers invariably hoot (Often after I have been abused to leave the surf before I have even had the chance to catch a wave)! Beats coping attitude trying to compete with shortboarders on some fat mutant thing with unfair paddling power?

Thank you Dave for the encouragement to stick with it and all the best to the future of SUP.

I agree with you agreeing with Dave. The whole progressive surfing thing does nothing for me as a spectator, and even less so when you have a paddle in your hands. Let the short boarders have that aggressive approach, SUP can never match it and will always be the poor cousin. Stick to style. And the trend towards tiny boards that don't quite float an average sized rider - it really does seem to miss the point of SUP.

It is not so much about an absolute disdain for "progressive" SUP. More like if it is going to go this way, as Dave goes into, you want to be using that paddle to go places where prone boards can't? (Don't forget hardcore carves using the extra power you can apply to the rail using the paddle!)

Unfortunately, as again in the interview, too much emphasis is put on "progressive" as compared to shortboarding, leaving SUP looking like a poor cousin. Sup needs to become a discipline of its own?

I also really like the way Dave compares SUP to other paddle sports like canoeing. A lot of people overlook this wanting to just go down that "progressive" shortboarding blind alley. Real pity when SUP has the potential to develop into something much more inspiring?

I get what you are saying. It's not hard to watch even Pro SUP comps thinking "more of the same". Regardless, then you see someone who integrates there paddle skill with style. All of a sudden it's "Wow that looks good"!

As long as the paddle is being used to crank powerfull turns and pivots i rekon short supping can be great to watch.it sucks when they use it to take off , then basically put in the bag.if a board size restriction comes in , then it may just be longboarding with a paddle.Simple really you just have under 10 comp and over 10 comp or under 9I think sup focus should be on big paddle in waves.
