THE MAMBO MERIMBULA CLASSIC 2009 PROGRAMME

Merimbula Sailboard Club welcomes you to the 29th Mambo Classic, a celebration of wind and waves, the longest running wave sailing event in the WORLD and, some would say, run by some of the oldest farts in the world, who, having had their primes way back in the last century, deny it is all over, and continue to punch above their weight.

With the inclusion of SUP surfing the event offers no excuse to be out of the water except to feed up on the clubs famous BBQ or go to the parties.

Our aim is to feed you, entertain you, and get you out wave sailing or kite surfing or SUPping in the best winds and waves available over the four day extravaganza.

Check in daily at Mission Control, the environmentally organically green shed at Ford Oval on Main Beach.

Up to the minute weather reports and forecasts will be available for you to peruse over a cup of the world??s best coffee, and catch all the dawn patrol SUP surfers strutting their stuff.
A decision as to the day??s wind based action will be made between 10am and 11am.

Daily briefings will be held at Ford Oval clubhouse at 10:00am PLEASE ATTEND

Contest Area: An area will be marked off with Buoys in the water and Flags on the beach. The Kite surfing area will be separated and down wind from wave sailing.

??buffer zone?? DO not sail/kite or SUP in this area.

Judges are out there day and night watching every move you make so be nice to them.

The inflatable rescue boat will be based in the buffer zone with marine radio contact.

The Lakeview Hotel Merimbula will be the official watering hole during the event
The bistro serves great meals and succulent Merimbula oysters.

or everyone in together

Boylos

Thanks Boylo's, yes this years addition was concocted over a few beers at the Lakeview last year. It was deemed that the event needs to lift its game and get 'way more serious'!

The Balmoral Boards Beach to Bar SUP OFF will be a hotly contested event and naturally State rivalries will come into play. We believe there will be security on hand to deal with this. There is no limit to how many teams (of 4) or how they are put together.

We decided to discarded the usual categories and introduce some real ones -
Best dressed Team
Best Team effort
and of course
Best peformance

I think the teams will naturally fall into SATE OF ORIGIN teams so the main Trophy for the event, will in effect be a STATE OF ORIGIN TROPHY!

Exactly what is involved is a guarded secret but there will be a few obstacles in the course (on and off the beach) and it will definitely involve drinking something.

So its time to look around, gather up some friends and and find an outfit!

Cant wait!

I say a 14ft limit as there are some girls coming from goldie and they are only bringing their 14fters down for flat water stuff.
Otherwise they will miss out on race and i know they are keen as mustard to get into the mambo spirit.

No way it should be under 10ft don't want to make it to easy and i'm sure there will be stacks of sub 10ft boards.

Hey Angi & Jacko,
Here's a way to solve your argument - make every team have one member on a sub 10 footer???

I dunno if this is too technical, but maybe you could have a total board length limit of say 48ft (4x12') so If one team member wants to paddle a 14ft board, someone else makes up for it with a 10footer.
That way the people who only have a small board can paddle it and team up with others with larger boards and overall it should work out pretty even.

That's a great idea but I think it may work even better if you have a total combined volume limit per team. This can be based on 70% of length x width x depth. Then combine that formula with 19.7% of centre fin length, divided by total weight of all deck pads.

Don't forget legropes are compulsory so you will have to multipy pie x 4 leg ropes and account for those using thick leggies vs those that are using thinner ones, so return to the original formula based on volume.

AA will be more than happy to officiate over all teams regarding this rule.

I'd love to see everyone trying to calculate that after a few beers.

Maybe we should forget about board limits and everyone just paddles what they want - team that has the most fun wins! It is Mambo afterall.

I think you should have to slam a beer for every foot of your board! 14' = 14 beers! Should even out in the wash after that.

Hey Dog, Yep we got a session on the 7'9" on Saturday, quick review in it's own thread. Funky little beast.
