I'm a coming ,oh my god I'm coming!!!! DJ, I'm glad you work in the field of Medicine just in case I do myself a misery!!! First Downwinder ever. I'm so excited a bit of wee came out. ( Ill check later to meke sure it was wee) So I meet you guys at Sandy Point and across to Waratah Bay is that right? (he say's hopping about like a flea on amphetamines!!!)
No seriously is it at the Sandringham Yacht club car park? I have A VW passat station wagon so I can carry 5 including myself but my straps will only tie on two. If you want to see me looking like a drowned rat come along. DJ, if you laugh at me I'll stand on a box and reach up and............. laugh along with you looking you straight in the eye!! The only reason i got a Naish was because you said they're the best!! If I fall off it's your fault!!!! also Nick Moloney at CORE boardsports gave me a deal I couldn't refuse!!! I'm sorry about leaving the drool stains on your showroom floor Nick! The worst part was he had some other amazing boards for sale and I nearly bought a Fanatic as well!!! Top bloke, great advice and an amazing sportsman. I didn't realise he was a sailing legend!! I left with his book and DVD. Proceeds of the book go to Sail4cancer. A humble guy that puts his money where his mouth is. I left very impressed at his humility. If I'd done a quarter of what he's done I'd be stoked!!!

Come on Leroy,I'm hanging to find out how your day went. I think the wind took it's time getting up this morning and hopefully there wasn't too much west in it. Loving these posts.

Submerged log rather than drowned rat. .quite a bit more practice required I'm afraid. Top crew of people however. I had to come in at Brighton beach houses. Absolutely knackered. Ah well life's no fun without a challenge. Great board crap rider. It was my first downwinder and first time on the board. I'll certainly give it another couple of shots after my hip operation. Makes you realize how talented DJ and the crew are!!

Hey Leroy...yep the first bay downwinder is a bit of an eye-opener isn't it? DJ's super-experienced and super-patient, you couldn't ask for a better tutor. My first one was in about 35knots on an unsuitable board and I swam more than stood, made it to Sandy eventually, legs like jelly and well-and-truly munted (but frothing for the next one ). Since then I've maybe only done about a dozen and a half or so with DJ and the crew, in conditions ranging from 15-45+, each one more fun than the last (haven't done one for a few months, due to escalating work and family demands ). I'm usually last in and have never kept my hair dry. If you were struggling you did exactly the right thing pulling the pin early...a couple too many falls in that cold water can just suck the energy right out of you and leave you in real trouble (and make you someone else's problem!).

(betcha you're frothing for the next one though...yeah?)

Yep Leroy, DJ is guilty of making it look simple, though as he always points out he has learned the hard way and I am sure he must have paddled hundreds of downwinders over the past few years. Also I think you may have struck a rough day to lose your virginity on the Bay. I was a couple of k's inland but there were times when the wind really seemed to be westerly which ain't no fun out there when your trying to head south. It also means a lot of side slop, which when your legs are fatiguing will put you back in the water pretty quick.
I am still very much a novice but my key learning over my last few downwinders is that the bigger the conditions the fitter you have to be to cope with it. I had thought that more wind behind you would mean less paddling hence easier on the body, but in reality it just means the water is a lot messier so although you may paddle less your core is working a lot, lot harder. I finished my last one on my knees over the last couple of km's, annoyed as hell at myself but my legs were pretty much shot and everytime I stood I ended up in the drink pretty quickly.
Good luck with the op and hope to catch up with you for some rehab on the water.
Roll on Saturday night (Bledisloe),AB's by 9 points
