Having taken a lot of new suppers out for lessons on the coast in Vic over the past 12 months, I have noticed an alarming fact.....
Woman seem to take to supping quicker than men!! This may offend some male suppers but it is what I've noticed for sometime now and i'd like to hear from anyone with similar experiences.
Is it that woman have better balance, co-ordination and skill, or is it that they just listen during the lessons as opposed to their male counterparts!!!
Take the weekend as a recent example.
I took two middle age woman out with no surfing or sporting background who never fell off, and were able to master the basics quite quickly in calm conditions.
One hour later, same conditions, two young, fit males, with sporting background in their early 20's who struggled from the start, and spent more time in the water than on top of the board. Still, we had lots of fun!
This is one example of many I've experienced over 12 months.
Maybe is boils down to the fact that GENERALLY SPEAKING, men are a bit more cocky and push the envelope in the initially stages of learning, whereas woman are just better listeners!!

you could be onto something with the balance thing , look at gymnasts or i could be most women are much lighter than men.Its good they can cook and sup though!

Women generally have wider hips and a lower center of gravity than men. That could be a factor.

I agree with you about young males pushing the envelope though.

I have noticed the same thing though I wonder if it is because generally the females are smaller so the board is relativly bigger/wider making it more stable

I think a factor may be that men are more motivated to do "manly" sports like surfing and SUP and whatever so they well try it out ... even though they are physically klutzes.

Women, on the other hand, have a life and responsibilities and emotional and personal connections with their friends and families and children (not to mention cleaning up the mess made by men. )

A woman who is inspired to try SUP even though the boards are ridiculously big and heavy and gay looking, is more likely to be physically competent and more able to deal with the fairly minimal balance and paddling strength requirements.

Not so alarming freally!

Exactly the same experience WIZARD and yes, it appears there are many reasons including the fact that most school boards are designed for people up to 100kg and most women weight a lot less. I have had strugglers in both genders however but the main reason the bulk of women master it quickly (IMO), is that women come at it from a completely different angle.

Guys tend to charge and think they can muscle their way through it where women approach it more thoughtfully and slowly. The 'balance thing' can take a whilst and starting slowly with less powerful strokes is a big help. Women rock and most schools will tell you it is the bulk of their customers - GO THE GIRLS !

was your wife looking over your shoulder when you typed this

I have found it pretty even , I took my board with me on Australia Day out on the boat , it's only a 9'10 and regardless of gender it was all the smaller men and women that could paddle it , if I had a bigger board I think the results would lent towards the ladies , everyone had ago around lunch time with a few beers and wines under there belt so, it was a pretty funny to watch.

The reason for this is quite clear.

Stop giving the dodgy, tippy boards to the blokes.

Absolutely I have noticed and mentioned this several times, once the males get the hang of the surfing part they leave the women behind

But for the first timers the women win hands down!!

this is true,
the women we have taught don't try and tame the swell and waves they just role with the motion of the ocean, and they are sober.

Yeah I rekon women are starting ahead of most men in regards to their physical make-up.
Generaly speaking they are:
- shorter
- lighter
- wider hips
= lower centre of gravity

BUT I agree with most...women approach with a sense of caution. Balance first then paddle. Men...Jump on, start paddling

Go the GIRLS!! I do know that if you come along and watch a fitness class, you will be pretty impressed with some of the ladies, good luck to any male wishing to catch them!
You only have to ask guys like, Jake, Jacko etc.. that have been along to a fitness class and they will tell you how hard these ladies go!

I will try and post a photo.

Sorry I meant Candice Appleby. Credit where credit is due
She beat some top male riders including Brian Keaulana, Noah Shimabuckuro and Nolan Martin.
The story is in the latest Standup Journal, page 86

you want to see girl sup then come to noosa, there are stacks of them, flat water, ocean, and surf, seems the word is spreading about core training.a lot of the women have surfer husbands so it gives them a chance to have a common interest, now there is an idea, get your wife/girlfriend paddling while you surf, happy wife happy life.ps.
