They came in the early afternoon.
Before the seabreeze.
In that quiet time when the land breeze has finished it's work and the new shift is almost due to take over.
Two of them.
Dark lean shapes.
I spotted them early but they stayed about fifty metres away, outside the break quietly waiting it would seem. Menacing.

The conditions weren't special.

Because it was in deep water the swell was only big enough that it broke sporadically. The break had been crowded earlier with about twelve surfers in the water. A gaggle of lids and three prone riders but they had tired of waiting between sets and had headed in.

I had the place to myself before these two turned up.

I watched them for a while but then chose to ignore them. They weren't coming any closer and though I felt uncomfortable decided that a couple more waves and I would pack it in.

The swell I had patiently been waiting for loomed and I turned to pick it up when suddenly there was movement.

From one side I saw the first one approach, circle then flash past as the other patrolled on a wider arc.
I continued paddling but by now I was on edge.

The one on the outer moved away and didn't present any real threat but the closer one came to within about three metres .

Shouting and threatening them with the paddle seemed to make little difference.

I persevered for about ten more minutes but they made it too uncomfortable to stay.The sea was a froth from their excited frenzy and I felt it wasn't prudent to stay

I came in and packed up.

What can we do about jet skis?
How close are they allowed to approach other water users?
What rights do we have as surfers?
Are there water hoon laws?
The two young blokes where having fun (at my expense) and I know what it is like to be young and silly.
However. We do need some clear guidelines so we can both inhabit our aqua world peacefully

There are very clear guidelines for boats and jetskis elbeau, but it would be a cold day in hell before you see any policing up this way.

From DPI website:
Without the approval of the Department you may not drive a powerboat at over 8 knots:

through an arch of a bridge (unless water skiing is specifically permitted for a bridge);
in or through a mooring area;
within 15 metres of a vessel underway; and
within 45 metres of:

(i) a moored vessel;

(ii) a person in the water;

(iii) a jetty or wharf; or

(iv) a river bank or low water mark.

Thanks Cranky.
That gives me some direction for the future.
I suggest the authorities probably need to be informed of my disquiet... and will be

One day there is going to be a major paddle craft v. Jet Ski incident in the Maroochy River.
Hopefully not invloving me. Unlikely to be me as I am on a big yellow board standing up above the horizon.
However my mate who paddles a kayak swears one day some jet ski will come flying over a wave out in the river mouth and land directly on top of him. Ouch.

How do you regulate so this won't happen?

"within 15 metres of a vessel underway"

Is that us?... are we a vessel?

I've had some jetski wackers come over close and hassle me going round and round thinking their wake will make me fall off.

Should they be no closer than 15 meters?

If so.. I'm telling Mummy.. .....kidding.. but it would nice to know just how close they can come to us.

Victorian Coastal waters (ie the bay):

MAXIMUM SPEED 5knots.

• Within 50 m of swimmers, other vessels
and fixed or floating structures
• Within 100 m of divers/divers’ flag
• Within 50 m of water’s edge (inland)
• Within 200 m of water’s edge (coastal and enclosed)

Pauloz,,
And I obey this when riding my Penis extension !!

Ps.. Many of us use our skis well, we Wakeboard .. and cruise.
Sadly I cannot defend the large number who become fkrs as soon as they take control.

I believe it is a similar rule in QLD but 30m is the distance.

But then I am not sure if all bets are off when we are paddleing what is essentially a bar crossing?? maybe someone could shed some light on this.

Jet Ski's,some of them are WANKERS, like the guy who was jumping my boats wake and landed two foot from where my wife was sitting in the back corner
I fired up ,this TOTAL WANKER almost killed my wife,and when I gave him a mouth full,he told me to F OFF sprayed the boat and buggered off like a WANKER don't!
I know not all ski riders are WANKERS but most of them are [}:)][}:)][}:)]

Two jetskiers (water bogans) ran into each other on the Swan on Saturday with one of them unfortunatly dying in the ambo on the way to hospital. Now we have the WA Jetski Assoc. saying they don't have enough space dedicated for riding. Like any form of transport they can be a menace if its been controlled by someone who just don't give a s*#t about anyone else. Unfortunately the bad jetskiers seem to far outweigh the considerate jetskiers.

I'm not disputing that most jetski riders are w@nkers, cobber.

What I am stating is that most other surfers who don't ride SUB see SUB riders as a menace.

And yep, I've been surfing well over 30 years some professionally-and yep, I have a SUB.

Apologies for the truth touching a sore point.

Hey Elbeau
You could write Mills and Boon or the Womens Weekly. I was starting to wonder why you were still in the water. Good tale.

We have this prob at al river mouths. At mooloolaba we get a couple of great sessions a year when the swell breaks from the lighthouse to the beach. (deep low or cyclone required). When this happens you get some of the best SUP sessions possible. I recently had a day spoiled by some close circling Jet Skis which were not only totally destroying the waves but were also a health risk. They were jumping over from the back of the waves where it would have been impossibe to see any of the surfers that they were nearly landng on. It was a case of showing off as they have the abbility to go to more remote places to play safely.

I should have and recommend to others to take their rego number and report such behaviour before more get hurt.

As for short board riders hate SUP... I suppose there are some and always will be. I have grown up surfing all types of craft and it has always been the inherent issue in my experience where one group dislikes another. This is normally born by ignorance or by selfish riders. I believe in being considerate to other riders of all craft as they should be. These forums constantly remind others to do the same and i believe it is important that we do or a few could cause a bad name for the rest like what is happening to Jet Skis and what happened to goatboaters.

enjoy.. enjoy.

The legal distance for jet skiers, or blowflies as I refer to them, in excess of 6 knots
is 60 metres in Qld waters. Sadly MSQ have not got the manpower to actively catch and prosecute these fools but do not think that MSQ do not take the issue of maritime safety seriously. If you refer to the MSQ website they have a whistleblower hotline which you can report this type of life threatening behaviour. A photo which identifies the craft, its rego number and its proximity to surfers or swimmers gives your complaint much credibility and enables the authorities to act accordingly. I believe that the water police are also interested in these type of unlawful activities.

during the festival there were lots of sup surfing the points,not all of them polite and thoughtful.the locals havnt got over that yet and now we have easter on us with a swell,should be fun to watch,there are already dozens of floaters on the points.another 20 or 30 sup surfers will make it interesting,especially the hire boards.

I agree there are heaps of dcikheads on skis out there you only have to look out at the alley when it 4 to 5 foot and see all the guys towin in through the crowd, and honestly i feel embarrassed to be a tow surfer when i see this sort of stuff going on.
Usually a wave of the arms and mouthing a few nice word in the direction of someone doing the wrong thing is enough to send them on there way as usually they know they shouldn't be doing it

We are now stocking all tow gear in our shop and make a point of telling people about the rules and trying to just get across about not being dickheads hopefully it helps in the long term.
