Yesterday out in the surf I used my old paddle I got with the kalama , just because I hadnt used it for a while and it was quite windy and i thought because it is wider and stiffer than the methane it would be good in the wind.
I was out for 2hrs and used the next paddle first then went in and got the methane. My first few strokes on the methane were like this really is a a classic paddle. I could not beleive how much better the methane was than the next.

I am a pretty big solid guy and would think I could overpower the methane, No chance if you use it properly. I rate this paddle big time and think it has helped me catch more waves. I would recommend it to anyone

I was out in the waves with mine the other day and then decided to do a distance paddle and then thought I wish I had my bigger paddle..but soon after I was paddling into a head wind and I was so glad I had the smaller Methane because I could paddle faster into the wind.. It's the best paddle if you want to paddle with a fast rate and not feel like you're being pulled off your board or straining your joints too much.. (IMO) ..

Any Melbourne'ites are welcome to try mine if they like.

I'm glad you like yours Brooko..

DJ, et al:
any way you could compare it to the werner spanker? that's what I own, but all this methane talk has got me wondering ...

I've paddled both and they're very different.

BTW..Werner have a new smaller blade paddle now called the Carve.. I'm sure it's very good also.

The main differences between the Spanker and the Methane is.

The Methane feels lighter..Only a smidge because the Werner is also very light.

The Methane is more narrow in the blade and has a bit less blade area.

The Methane has a more rectangle feel in the shaft and also a bit thiner diameter shaft.

The Methane has a dead flat blade face but because it's narrow it does not seem to flutter.

The T grip handles are also different.

They both have a good flex or spring in the shaft.

Both are great paddles.. You can defiantly paddle with a faster rate with the Methane.

You can see by this pic that the Methane is a longer triangle/teardrop shape blade and the Spanker is a bit more rounded and fatter shape.

Linter,

I have used a Spanker for the last 12 months and recently tried the Kialoa Shaka Pu'u which is the next size up from the Methane. I am 100kg and was on my Naish 11'6. I tried for a couple of hours but I could not get the Shaka Pu'u to work. I could not get any power and was constantly fighting to control the flutter.

I am sure the Kialoa's are good paddles there are plenty of good paddlers who love them, but I would not jump into a new paddle without trying it. I suspect what Brooko said is the key "I am a pretty big solid guy and would think I could overpower the methane, No chance if you use it properly.".

I pick up my new Methane tomorrow! Can't wait.

I'm 88kg and really only ride in the surf. I'm currently on an 11' Oxbow but have a 9'2" PSH on the way.
