looks like there paddles are not even in the water The rocks look nasty

I love the outriggers, I was in rarotonga and had a look at a few in there stands just befre i got told to piss off[}:)]

I did not think they looked that long untill i looked up close.

But then i guess everything becomes small in the ocean.

Would love to give it a go one day, Ahhhh Maybe some flat water

Congrats Simon and Sam.. Great effort... and also a great result for C4 in the 14' class.

Did you notice what Starboard Ekolu Kalama was on?.. Was he on the standard Starboard Point?

How rough was it?.. Did you fall much?.. Jonathan and I have talked about maybe doing it next year.

DJ

Thanks DJ,

Eloku was on an custom SIC F17 coloured with his sponsors logos. The guy is a freak. I was paddling along the 'Wall' and fell a few times. You had 5-6ft swell hitting you from all directions as is shown by the pics sue has posted.

Well done guys, great effort.

Not a race for the faint hearted, had ideas of doing the race on a ski back in the eighties but never got there.

1st Ekolu Kalama of Maui in a record time of 5:02:06.
2nd Guy Pere 5:22:01.

Ekolu Kalama.amazing time.only 5min behind jamie mitchel.i think Ekolu ride a 14'8" starboard point.
hard to find any info on the race.

Ekolu was on 17' Starbooard - it was an SIC custom board made for him.
Congratulations to Ekolu and Jenny Kalmbach - they were awesome out there!

Just to put the times in perspective. The molokai record for surfski is 3:20 and outrigger is 3:40. I think you will find they will get down to 4:30 on SUPs in good conditions. It makes sense that SUPs should be faster paddle boards.

I should have some video soon, mostly of Kai and Aaron (SUP winners) taken from their support boat. It's in transit from Hawaii this week. Post it soon as i get it.

In one change in the middle of channel I fell off 3 times in 20 minutes, water just moving everywhere. Simon surfed the bumps unreal and came down some of the best runners I have ever seen.
These guys just amazed me on the 14ft C4 boards. these boards are perfect for this race and conditions. no other stock board even came close to them.

skis are sitting down, and paddle boards are on there knees. balance is everything. when you are standing with all this moving water it is not as easy to get a perfect stroke in all the time.

so, would you say having a reasonably stable board for dw is a factor or is it more about lenght you can handle

lenght you can handle and lenght that would suit the conditions.I think the smaller boards went good. the open boards went good to but Ekolu Kalama is a freak. and I think boards could be 30 wide and would be tippy in those conditions.

Sorry Kolumama for the mistake. I got that from the Honolulu Advertiser story/results and as I met Ekolu on Maui in April when he loaned me one of his boards for a few days...I didn't think anything of it. That's for clearing that up and welcome to Seabreeze !!

Old news now I know but I came across this pic today which I wanted to share and which shows what the Molokai channel can be like. This was taken last year. Once again a 42ft long outrigger.
