Looks like great conditions for racing today. A Hawaiian friend of mine who is escorting someone has said it's cloudy, about 28oC with a 30km/hr E/NE wind which is great for any Molokai crossing. East is directly behind you in canoes but as these guys start more North on Molokai is will be perfect. He said the wind was already up at 7.30am this morning.

Apparently so many entries that they will split the paddleboards and SUP next year into two separate races at separate times of the year.

I know Rollo90 (Sam) and Newcastle SUP (Simon) have teamed up and are competing in the relay. Any other Aussies on SUP ??

Jamie Mitchell just won in a little over 4:58.

The team of Aaron Napoleon & Kai Bartlett are the first stand up finishers.

Ekolu Kalama is ahead of Dave Kalama

I think Sam Williams is also there.. and having a go on a SUP I think.

She's just joined our forum so I'm sure we'll get an update from her.

Glad they got good conditions.. Congrats to Aaron and Kai.

That's over 10km/hr - pretty fast! Nice to see the gap closing between the paddleboards and SUP's. Only 4-5 mins seperating them over 50km!

It was one hell of a race and so glad to have done it. Billy came down with food poisoning the night before and was discharged from hospital at 1am this morning before the race. The guy is a winner to just to even attempt to start but unfortunately he was unwell again at the 2hr mark.
The first half was epic with lots of runners, the last 6 miles was brutal with the outgoing tide. The C4 Vortices came 1st, 2nd & 3rd in the stock 14' class, Sam & I were on a Lahui Kai Unlimited and came 4th in our division 1-79age team i think and 54th across the line out of 126.

Congrats Simon and Sam.. Great effort... and also a great result for C4 in the 14' class.

Did you notice what Starboard Ekolu Kalama was on?.. Was he on the standard Starboard Point?

How rough was it?.. Did you fall much?.. Jonathan and I have talked about maybe doing it next year.

hey guys thanks,
there is no way in Australia you can train for these race conditions. I have never seen water move that way or swells and wind chop that big. glad to have done. From the first change up I was sea sick the whole way across the channel (not very fun).I was all good on the board just not on the little boat. Ekolu Kalama is a freak. and so are the boys on the stock 14ft C4 boards to come in so quick. first half of race there were some unreal runners, second half was hell. last 5 miles took forever.

all those that have had food poisoning know it's one of the most miserable experiences you can ever have, like death warmed up.for me it's unbelievable courage that billy watson was even at the start line, the man should have been in bed
cheers

Good effort to get across Simon & Sam and it goes show just how tuff this race is. Alot of people have a romantic perpsective about this race , it's not only very tough but a tactical race as well. Anyone considering doing it should do as many races as they can here first. The outrigger series Aussiewahine has been promoting on this site is a good start to prepare for this race.

Again well done Simon & Sam.

Yes Sam you are right there. To give you guys a visual of what he's talking about, here are some pics I took of my husbands outrigger team doing Molokai a few years back. These canoe's are 42ft long.

This section is called "The Wall" (for a few reasons) where you come into Portlock Point on Oahu only a couple of km's from the finish (for SUP/paddleboard). Just gotta get around that point on the left. You usually have to get right in close to the cliff to get out of the tide. So the guys yesterday would have not only had to tackle the head on tide but also this back wash and a 20kt head wind. Does this look familar Rollo ?? I think I was sea sick about here too that year !!

I know you love your pics DJ .... do you like these ??
