Most people don't know but each year there is two Mambo events in Merimbula.

One is the Mambo wave classic held in November.. and the other is a Mal surfing comp held in May.

This year there is no SUP division in the comp but John Smyth says that we are welcome to come along and check it out and maybe put on a demo.

I'm guessing that next year SUP's may be included.

So..any Mal surfers that are keen here's some info.

THE MAMBO MERIMBULA MALIGATOR

SATURDAY 23RD MAY 2009

Merimbula Sailboard Club will be presenting the 23rd annual Malibu surfing competition at Main Beach Merimbula on the 23rd May.

This event attracts surfers from the NSW coast to Victoria who come to mix it with a keen bunch of locals.

Last year local Phil Overend won from Narooma’s Ray Lawrence in a classic showdown in good consistent three foot waves.

MAMBO will be the major sponsor and along with a range of other industry and local sponsors will see a prize pool of over $5,000 in prizes.

In addition there will be trophies for the six finalists as well as a range of categories from junior, local, veterans, women’s and dead set legends, for the over sixties, last year claimed by Tony Haid of Wolumla.

Registration will take place at the Lakeview Hotel between 6 and 7:30 pm. Or you can get entry forms from either Merimbula Surf Shop or Core Boarding, Pambula. $60 is the cheap entry fee which covers entry plus all the food you can eat plus MAMBO Malligator T-shirt, plus trophies plus prizes.

Competitors meet at Main Beach (Ford Park) ready for the first heat at 7am. All competitors have at least two chances before elimination, so it becomes a hard test of endurance surfing to make it through the grueling schedule.

Quarter and semi finals are held early afternoon with the Fianl around 3 pm.

This is a fun day for surfers and spectators alike with the BBQ sizzling all day and the malibu’s charging in the fight for the final honours. Plenty of good surfing is on offer all day with Malibu riders, young and old strutting their stuff in a combination of classic manoeuvres ranging from nose riding, drop-knee cut-backs and quasimodos and heaps of classic el espontaneos.

Wow,
No SUP at the Mambo. Well I guess thats it for me then. The windsurfing was a bit of a second to the kite comp really so with no SUP, looks like I need to plan something else. We need a national SUP comp, not in the far reaches, some where central. Any ideas anyone?

Scotty, I think that is no SUP at the Maligator comp that is in a few weeks time.

I believe the November comp will still have Windsurf, Kite and SUP. The comp was windsurfing only at one stage and few years back started a Kite category as well as many of the windsurfers coming along were riding kites on the light days...now the kites have taken over a bit, and IMO unfortuantly taken away from the event. I stopped attending when the Kites turned up on mass.

But then I'm not the organiser, so not my decision.

Yeah Scotty.. the real Mambo in November will be a huge SUP event this year.. Much bigger than last year.. Hope to see you there again..

The reason that John gave me for why SUP was not included in the Maligator Mal event was that because it's just a one day thing there wasn't enough time.

Quote..

Hi dave
This event is so rushed.
We hold it in one day with all categories together in a double elimination down to 6 finalists.

We talked about SUPs but decided we couldn't fit in so we are leaving it for November with plenty of time over the four days.

Your welcome to come up join in and do a SUP demo.

foods still good
Cheers John
