Watching the Gold Coast news tonight and that old news cherry, Surf Rage reared it's head again with a representative of a local boardriders club sinking the boot in over an isolated incident involving a SUP surfer supposedly running over a Japanese tourist. Wonder how many incidents not involving a SUP surfer happened at the same point break over the long weekend?

so many wankers everywhere in the world. I saw it on the news and couldnt believe he wanted to keep going when the bloke was on the ground covering up. Hopefully next time someone that can hold up their hands will put one on his chin. Not one for fighting, would prefer to roll around with a girl then a man. YET sometimes you just got to do what you gotta do.[}:)]

I seen a friend of mine yest in very small surf at the Alley. He was on a shortboard an was having a laugh with me about How many times he had been hit with SUP boards over the weekend. The next wave he paddled for a guy on a SUP paddled for it and then tried to pull off and his board flicked up and hit him in the stomach. He went off his rocker at the guy and was yelling to me 'see what I mean' hard for me seeing I was on a 14'er.

This is just one guy who was hit 3 times in 1 weekend.

I love riding my SUP at the Alley but plead with people if you can't control your board, for the safety of others stay clear of the crowds.

I agree with you CMC. But at the same time if you wanna surf in crowds be prepared to get hit by a board as well. Even the best surfers in the world fall off when they least expect it. Thats my 2 cents worth

I guess a kooks a kook, the only difference being a learner on a SUP needs a lot more room in the water. I think maybe those getting into it shouldn't surf south of the rock wall at Laceys and maybe it's up to retailers to give a bit of instruction from about the do's & dont's. I've surfed for 30 years on a shortboard and didn't paddle out the Alley on a SUP until I felt I was able to do it competently and safely.

in my time, i haven't copped a sup, but been smacked by a lot of mals, even when i've been on a sup.
the alley is a magnet for learners, so be aware

flipside- there is a real worrying trend of novice/ intermediate sup pers heading smack out in the guts of the lineup when most of the experienced crew that can handle some crowded lineup stuff choose to stay wide
cheers

Small bit on 'Bondi Rescue' tonight showed one of the lifesavers suping, shortly followed by him standing there with a broken nose (self inflicted though) & one of his colleagues saying "these sups are new, and no-one knows how to do it properly yet!" I haad to laugh at that comment...

I'm sure there are a few guys here that would disagree?

surfed there today , pretty crowded but its a bit like defensive driving , sum up the situation before you go for a wave , be aware of whats happening around you. Expect the stinkeye will be back in vogue again now for a while, oh well crap happens. Two sides to every storey , I wonder if the tourist was competent surfer.

Good watching the shorties get some nice barrels today though , even watched a guy on a clubbbie get a sick barrell.

Yeah i could see some people getting hit from time to time especially with strong offshore winds, it makes being on a SUP just that bit harder and more board for the wind to get under. Pretty sure most Shops advise new riders as to where to go in the surf , maybe some of the problem is people getting hire boards and being able to take them in to the surf? I know we refuse to hire boards for anything but flat water but there are plenty out there who dont give a rats, could be some of the probs no leggies and no clue does not make a good combo!!

My take on the bad press on sup's.There big,its like being tailgated by a semi on the highway, you feel intimidated and move lanes, add someone standing tall while your sitting.Semi's need a wide berth like mal's,Ride them at any open point like the Ally, but a crowded congested point and its a whole new ball game.If your not experienced go wide as Lacey said, theres only one bloke who can get away with sup'ing Snapper and thats JC anybody less skilled is going to course grief.

What about SUP riders dropping in on other SUP riders and not even thinking about having a look over their left shoulder.

Guys dropping in ,and then being too slow/inexperienced to make the section are forcing you to straighten up to avoid a collision, make it very dangerous for the guys paddling back out through the inside.

This gives all SUP's a bad rap!

Too many people leave their brain in the car before surfing.

People should surf to their limitations. They should consider the location crowd and own ability. This is a no brainer. Problem is that this takes self management and like sheep many are drawn to a crowd. Great breaks but heavily crowded are often less fun then some of the other breaks that don't have the crowd. I am not just talking SUP but all craft. They also need to learn surf etiquette.

Some are doing to this sport what Aids and the clap did to free love :)

I was hit by a short board on the weekend whilst SUPing - guy had no control over where he was going.

Never seems to get mentioned that it happens both ways.

Surprises me that public liability hasn't raised it's ugly head around some of these incidents.Wonder how many surfers, sup, and every other water craft have insurance?I think if you are in a club it comes with membership, but for the rest of us, it's down to you.Unfortunately I think it's a matter of time before there are some claims,it happens in every other aspect of our lives unfortunately.

As Lacey said, it is so common to see novice guys paddling straight into the already over crowded line up out the alley, its ridiculous! I cant believe we dont make the paper more often because a fellow surfer ended up wearing 15kg of fibreglass across their scone.
On the other hand, you cant go to a break like the alley and expect not to get hurt, 99% will walk in unharmed but seriously, look at the place, it has every type of surf craft ever invented catching waves in one area, it has some top surfers out, it has people trying to surf that have never picked up a board before, it has goat boats, short boards, mals, clubbys, ski's, sups, fishing boats and the occasional surf boat to cause some carnage too. If everyone does their bit, it makes it that bit safer. There will always be dick heads and their will always be more than one surf craft on the break so in my opinion, there will always be a danger.

And reach - 9ft board 9ft leggie = 18ft

Goats are worse!! If they let go of the paddle they just bounce around all over the place, Ive been hit twice

Insurance cover for club members is for only when involved in club activities. Not personal surfing. Just to be clear.

I know its not the right thread but I've been toying with the idea of getting in a SUP. Mostly for just paddling around Rottnest of my boat but would like to have a bit of a play in the surf as well. Especially on real small days with my kids.
Now to my question. Would a Inflatable board like a ULI be better for this? I assume it would still hurt a little if you got hit with one but it would have to be better than a FG board?
