Well, looks like I might soon have a new 9.6WAA on my hands and, while I get used to its size, I'm wondering what a good & stable fin set up for it might be -- one that hopefully does not overly dampen the board's attributes. Suggestions, anyone? Thanks!

Something like this would be the most stable IMO but I don't think it will turn any good.. .. (just kidding)

Here's a good site with links to many fin companies.. http://www.infofaq.com/buying-online/sports/windsurfing/fin-companies.html

I would think that about 8" would be as big as you would want to go on a board that size.. but the smaller 6-7" fins should make the board turn better.

I think this is the fin that Blane recomended to Rich for his 9'6" PSH WAA.

Sunny G sides and a 6' centre is a great performance combination for the 9.6 WAA but is not the most stable. What weight /height are you?

Yeah, performance is not what i'm after at this point ...
meanwhile, i'm 6', 185 lbs, and balance challenged, so im looking for a fin set up that'll allow me to progress without getting totally frustrated.

I would suggest sticking a fairly large centre fin in (9"-10" for example) OR just using the centre fin that comes with the board, placing all the way BACK in the box, and putting a largish set of FCS fins (M7, Garcia, Occys, Rawsons or TCs redline) in the side fins in place of the FCS GLs that come with it-that is NOT a good loose surfing set up-but would be the most stable down the line set up and reduce yaw effect for someone coming down from a larger board.

As you get used to it, replace the large side fins with the GLs and move the centre fin up the box-eventually you can put the larger FCS fins back in the side and the same rear one in the centre box (taking out the large centre) with an FCS adaptor-that WILLbe a nice loose set up for that board.

Just a suggestion.

Great board by the way-enjoy.

Hi Linter ,

Your weight might be a factor to consider ?.....im 83kg's.

The fins i had in the 9'6WAA pictured was FCS Sunny Garcia side fins and a 5.5" back fin , but that was set up for more performance.

Suggest to start out with FG5 side fins and a 7"-8" dolphin shape fin for the back ,this will also help to paddle straight and suggest first few paddles in calm conditions as the wind will make this more of a challenge.

Then later on get a smaller back fin ....5-6inch put half way in the finbox.

Also move the back fin towards the back of the fin box to start out this will draw out your turns , and move fin forward to half way up the box for more performance loosen up.

Great choice of new board i was totally stoked with mine , and yes FIN options made a huge difference and iv'e trialed heaps .

Second that-it's amazing the performance differences you can get out of these PSH boards by playing with the fin configurations.

I reckon Session has it spot on for your weight.I now use an 8" cutaway for chop (Thx OG Phil) and a 6" Dolphin and FC 7 for clean days.
I do have 40lb's on you though!

I have experimented quite a bit with the 9'6WAA and different fins.

The board likes a more vertical center fin with less rake and a cut away base if you want to retain stability but also want to maximise the loose feel of the board.

I have found the most important aspect is the depth of the fin in the water, this provides more stability due to the leverage it has on the board. More area in the tip also works to increase stability.

At your weight the FG or PC inside foil fins in size 5 should be fine or in size 7 if you want more stability again.

The inside foil fins seem to keep the board tracking straighter when paddling but help project the turn once it is initiated.

I have suggested this style of set up to Basecurve and several others and they are all stoked.

I prefer GL sides with a PC7 center and fin box adaptor. Yes session thinks I am a freak for riding that way but i love it laughs.

Phil,
You are using a 4.5" centre fin on your 9'6"?

FCS PC7 Center Fin Size:
Center Base: 4.56 in. 116 mm
Center Depth: 4.62 in. 118 mm
Surface Area: 15.75 in. 10100 mm
Sweep: 33

Also, for comparison (for others), here is the dimensions of the GL sides:
Centre Base: 3 7/16"
Centre Depth: 3 5/8"
Surface Area: 9 1/4"
Sweep: 31
Flex: very high(27.00)

Cheers, Ronnie

Ronny,

I guess a picture is worth a 1000 words, the tape measure doesnt lie.

I have been riding an FCS FG5 or PC7 thruster set in my 10'6wAA for 4months

I took these pics in the garage 5 mins ago:

10'6WAA

9'6WAA

9'6WAA Center Fin 6inch for bigger waves, I normally surf the PC7 up to 4ft.

9'6WAA GL

Kristis Board FG5 Thrusters Set

These fins sets allow these boards to rip!

Remember I have 105kgs to throw them around.

Session is amazed that I can even stand on them most of the time.

I have tried 30+ different combos to find what I like.

This is the 10'6WAA carving out a bottom turn at Bells with the PC 7 fin sets.

Mate, was just trying to confirm as I thought a 4.5 inch fin was pretty small for that big of a board. I know you have spent heaps of time on these setups and was just trying to confirm the numbers as I just ordered a few fins today.

Looks like that centre fin comes in at about 6 inches which is about 30% bigger than the sizes I was questioning..........I had always thought the length of a fin was from the tip to the top of the base (effectively what sticks out of the board). The FCS site numbers are what I posted, but this clearly doesnt actually match with the physical size of the fins.

Further to this, I was looking for a 8-9" fin this weekend and held two fins that were supposed to be 3/4" different in length and there was very little discernible difference between the two.

Finally, although I check seabreeze more days than not, I dont actually post as I find when people dont really know me (or others) that posts can often be misinterpreted.

Thanks as always for your highly informative input into our sport.

Cheers, Ronnie

Hey Ronnie,

No offense taken at all the figures you posted are correct. My Pic is of a 6 inch center fin.

This is the PC7 centerfin height

I put the PC7 center fin in the 10'6WAA last weekend as it completes the fin set for that board. I wanted to surf a more stable board as I have injured my knee badly recently.

I use the 6 inch fin in the 9'6 for waves 4ft and above as it has more hold.

I am the dumb A$$ for confusing you

I like the small fins as it allows me to skate (side slip) the back of the 9'6 and 10'6 around and I love the feel of doing it.

Feet position on the board in my opinion is most peoples enemy and or the natural reation to step back and fall off on take off when sometimes you really need to step forward and drive the board down the wave.

My apology for a badly written post, personally I value your input.

Put a 8.5 inch laird fin in the gun for some solid waves felt great. Will try it in smaller waves soon seemed more positive than the 6 inch I had in. All depends on the conditions on the day. Try all of them something will gel. What I like you might not.

Great info, thanks guys!

for starters, i think i'll go with fcs pc-7 side bites and mess with some low-rake fins for the center. bueno!

G'day Linter,
I'm runninng a 5.5 inch with a 4.75 inch base Glide fin from Torquay ( same as Rich) but with carbon G5 's. I used this set up at 4ft SW Bells last night and it was good.
Good Luck.

the 8.5 was sh1t in small surf back to the 6 below double overhead. Should have know as the 9 6 WR feels really stiff with a large centre fin

Yup Your definitely right.

I seen it but I dont believe it lol.

I will do my home work on that one tomorrow as I believe there is a future fin equivalent.

You have me staggered that that is the way the board is set up?

I have just sent Blane an email to ask him how many were produced like that.

Yeah, I'm pretty bummed out that it's got futures not fcs. My board doesn't have the handle slot either. I just figured it'd be the latest model. Guess it's my fault for not asking before ordering. Damn impulse Internet purchases!

And ... thanks for any future future-fin advice you can dig up to offer!

(I pm'd Blane as well ...)

Linter,

I believe the Vector Futures Fin is the closest equivalent to the FCS inside foil fins
