Anyone keen to join me? .. Some time down the track when the conditions are right.

We could do it in glassy conditions and after an early start we should get back mid to late afternoon with a few stops along the way.

Check out this vid for some inspiration.

No one said anything about paddling around it anti-clockwise.

What's your problem - just paddle around it clockwise.

I've power boated and sailed around it heaps of times.
It's a big island...
Don't get stuck on the mud.
Not many areas to stop but spit point is perfect.
Watch out for areas with lots of tide and whirlpools.

Good luck!

Defo need for a support boat....you don't want to miss a chanel marker and end up grabbing hold of a the first big grey thing to pop out of the water over there....

Yes - marine Victoria (if your reading) - the circumnavigation of French Island will be totally safe.

I'd be happy to Frenchy by myself.. No need for boats or any of that fuss.. All those doing the across the bay event in the future should do it as a warm up because it's about the same distance.

I, ll start training now, and should be ready in about a decade, but buy that time i will be to old and or at retirement age

but really, have sailed around westernport a bit and the tide flow will be your friend if you time it right. and go the correct way

its a long way though!!!

try to hit the nth east side at high water , maybe go anti clockwise?

65 k's all up. the flood relief paddle flatwater with tides and wind most people averaged 5 k/hr. most of these poeple also train

so thats 13 hrs of paddling.

how much training are you doing or are going to do

going to need a lot of water

going to need plenty of food

electro drinks too.

first aid kit, spare clothing, spare paddles etc

a can of drink and a mars bar isn't going to cut it

problems - exposure, dehydration, exhaustion, illness and accidents

any emergencys contact setup for the above problems
any escape routes- any landings in emergencys, anyone on the island to help at those escape routes- do they want to help.
will the authorities be real happy about a call out

whats the tides and current situations around the whole island.

all this is only for starters, so many other factors.

all the elite paddlers- jamie mitchell etc take backup boats on their long paddles

i'm sorry dj, but you would be a fool to do this paddle without a backup boat. you would also be risking anyone elses well being that paddles with you.

Hey DJ,
Just a thought, why not make it an overnighter ?
Day 1: 40k
Camp over night.
Day 2: remainder 25k
Make it a true adventure.
Ya can't beat a camp fire and a few ales.
P.s. Don't forget your baked beans (Blazing Saddles).

I've been thinking the same thing.. There is even cabins on the other side of the island that I've stayed in before..I wonder if Kylie would let us stay at her house..

I have thought about it but don't know the area at all.. I've also been thinking about Inverloch and up the inlet heading east.. I've heard that's nice.. and also Orbust to Marlo would be a great river paddle that I will do one day.. Also Paynesville/Eagle Point area.

Have you paddled on the Gippsland lakes?

have never paddle down there, have spent alot of holiday time down ther e when younger and have done a little boating. I remember it being very sallow so any wind you get a decent chop wind swell and also mossies. Reckon it would ned some resarch and doing that would give you an amazing trip, even maybe get a surf on 90 mile beach 9 There is pleanty of boats around to for some extra company. Those other spots that you said would be great too.
cheers matt

DJ, instead of the comfort of the cabin, how about taking Bart's idea with a a sleeping mat/bed and anchor yourself of French Island for the night istead (damn crazy if you ask me! )

DavidJohn said...

I wonder if Connor will join him on this one.

Sleeping on the board at night.. That's going to be tricky.

Jonathan's got the same board (new 14' OpenOcean).. He should forget about the 11 cities paddle and join Bart on this..

What about if you came down to Melbourne to help out.

You could tie a long rope to DJ and all the other paddlers, then walk them around the island as he paddles. Bring along gumboots and a megaphone that way you could yell out all the different things they're doing wrong.

That'd be fun.

Would stopping for a spa still be regarded as an unassisted circumnavigation?

i was thinking about that tour last night and i was concerned if it went ahead

hastily wrote something up this morning, then had my regrets at work.

dj, i'm sorry about that last bit. you're definately a good paddler.

i just meant something like this needs a lot of planning.
the flood relief paddle was a bit of an eye opener. i did 14 hrs in 3 stints- i noticed after 4 hrs or so, its a whole different world to normal paddling

i'm liking the overnight plan, has a good feel and a bit fun about it

i'm no expert, but i've just grown more careful in my older age.

cheers

another option may be to paddle to corinella and stay in a pad there, and then go around the rest of the way the next day

The Croajingolong coast would be another great area for some coastal paddling with overnight stays. I have vague ideas in the back of my mind about how much fun that would be.

I think the key to it would be to have no time pressures, shore back-up and plan your trip in manageable sections so you can do it when the weather conditions are ideal. Perhaps Jonathon could be water back-up on his new ski.
