done a couple of seshs in very dark conditions..

The first was a pitch black paddle in the open ocean....wow,, the buzz you get, your body goes electric, don't know why...shark fear, being blind... it feels like your going nowhere in the Abyss, the only sense you have is the feel of the ocean swell passing under your feet.

The second was a very late wave sesh at mets, with Bob Marley... the sun had been down a while, there was only a smidgen of light and u could barely see the oncoming rollers - untill the last second. Bit of a Johny Utah moment,,,,YEEEEAHHHH i', SURFFFFFIN..u have to use the force a bit but when you get on the wave the Adrenalin is off the meter. stoked.

I've heard of guys doing Full moon paddles.

Chasing the sun as it rises.

They said they get about 7 or so kilometres out to sea before they turn around.

Sounds Epic.

It would have to be a full moon, no wind and summer to tempt me to paddle at night in the open ocean. Even then I reckon I'd be a bit jumpy. It does sound like fun though.

Did you go out by yourself windy?

Who else would be stupid enough to go with him? Oops, that would be me
We were night SUP surfing off a groyne. It was lit up and the beach also had some lights on it so seeing on the take off was not a huge issue.
Miller kept paddling out into the dark abyss between sets. He was frigin nuts. I refused. Eventually caving in to peer pressure. Theres no words to describe how it felt. I was totally out of my comfort zone. It freaked the hell outta me.

But the other night it wasnt too bad. Miller went in first which left me out there on my own. No lights. No warning of oncomming waves. Just madness.
Miller was up on the lookout and was yelling "OUT THE BACK!!!".
Finally got a wave in. It was one of the most strangest feelings ever

when I was a wee bit younger we used to swim at night on special occasions, Christmas night, New year etc as well as surfing at City beach under the light. We weren't alone. On a hot summers night quite a few people would go down to Scarbs for a dunk.
Later in my life I would gain employment as a shark fisherman. I remember laying two, one hundred metre nets overnight about a kilometre off Scarborough. Over a two night period we caught thirty two sharks. Mostly 4/5 foot reef sharks but some big ones as well including a tiger. That was only over a two hundred metre span.
I rarely stay out after the sun dips now.

No. What you can't see CAN hurt you.
But that shouldn't stop any of us from enjoying the primal pleasure of the adrenaline buzz that comes from stepping outside comfort city.
Time magazine did a great article on "things we fear" and the things we really should fear. The real chance of any of us dying due to an interaction between us and a marine creature is miniscule. The chance of any of us dying from ingesting the fat from a common surfers diet of chips from that famous scottish restaurant is huge. Heart disease kills almost a third of us. It isn't the killer sharks you should fear so much but the killerjoules and yes the killergrams.
