Just joined up and would love some advice on SUP hot spots in New Zealand. I`m intending heading there next month for a week or 2 in a hired campervan. Also never having travelled with an SUP, whats the best way of carting it around. Its a 9`11" Walden.
Gotta say this is a great forum. Love the online comraderie.....Good stuff!

I did the Britz camper thing on Nth Island a coupla years ago. Had no SUP but I would strongly advise you to upgrade to the midsize van so the SUP could live indoors.
NZ is no better or worse than Aussie for theft but some of the better SUP waves I saw were in the more isolated areas on the North West coast. Seemed to be a healthy longboard population too on the more well known breaks.
If it cant be seen it can't be stolen.
No offence meant to any of the NZ crew

Raglan and Piha are some great surf/SUP spots in the North Island. But depends if you are travelling west or east/North or South.. There are also some great rivers and lakes if you are up for a challenge and have an ultra thick wetsuit (brrrr). I'd love to see somebody try the Shotover or Kawarau river in the Queenstown area!!

A lot of wave choices around gisborne/east coast/mahia .....a bit off to the side of the main north island highways but that can be helpful if you're looking for uncrowded waves

Anyone know where you can hire SUP in NZ near a break? North Island only. Travelling March.

I would suggest talking to Jeremy Stephenson the starboard importer....he usually has demo boards on the go & maybe could suggest some possibilities. Based in Auckland.

Heading to NZ - perfect time of the year for a trip over that way. What island are you headed to? If you are going for only two weeks and want to take the scenic option then I would suggest you head to the South Island - there are loads of waves all along the east coast from Kaikoura in the north down to Dunedin in the South. There are so many good waves around the Catlans on the south side of Dunedin - your only problem will be finding some one to surf with and waiting for the swell size to drop. You can then head through Queenstown and Wanaka for some scenic beauty then to Milford Sound (an absolute must) and then up the West Coast where there are soo many waves and hardly any crew at all. Los of water moving on the wild west coast and winds from the SW may annoy you - although at this time of the year you could be very lucky and get offshores. Like the deep south there are so many waves on this wild and exposed area. You can finish your trip off with a trip over Arthurs Pass and back to Christchurch to fly out or if you have time head around the top and explore Abel TAsman national park and the Sounds.......beautiful.....did I mention all the vineyards you will drive through - that area is home of the infamous Sav Blanc and several lovely smaller brewers like Macs. Unreal. Don't forget the Pinot's when you go through Central Otago either!

If you go to the North Island then I think you want to play it by the weather. When you get there (probably Auckland) look at the weather map and make a call. I would recommend you stay clear of Raglan - great spot but the boys down there are not fond of SUP and u will be only able to get a few at Manu Bay which is super crowded these days but a top spot. I will annoy you and drop in a few shots of the waves I got at Raglan over xmas if you like.........

Back to the real stuff though - The north island is relatively small by Aust standards - so check the conditions and go for a drive. At this time of the year you will get east swell across the bay of plenty and all te way up the coromandle - the later having loads of great spots for SUP. You may also get yourself some waves north of Auckland on the east coast all the way to the top - if there is swell you will have a ball.....not too mention the mighty fine West Coast options - especially at te south end of 90 mile beach where when there is enough swell you will get rides longer than your legs can handle - enough said.....I reckon the best spots though are Taranaki on the West Coast - 4 hrs south of Auckland tops (you can hit Raglan on the way through) which has more waves than you can shake a stick at.........unbelievable set ups. Basically they are all points and reefs. A heavy local crew at some spots but there are so many it will not be an issue. Every road to the beach has good setups and some roads have 3 or 4 spots! Heaven. The SW wind though can kill you. If you make it that way make sure you find your way to "The Patch" - it would be unreal on a SUP and would save you the 30 min walk with your surfboard as you could just paddle!!!!

Gissy is the other spot - the whole east coast has great waves at this time of the year but from Mahia through to the top of the east cape you will find loads of waves and stuff all people - especially mid week now the schools are back.

Anyway if you need any other more specific details PM me and I will share - reluctant to give too much away - what I have just said is pretty common knowledge though.........so no dramas there!

Anyway here a few snaps from my trip back home in December.........Heaven!!!!!

By the way I hope you like going left as NZ has soo many sick setups!!!!!!

Thanks Ted, wow , now I wish I had room for the SUP and the MTB. I don't think I could afford the extra baggage !

Plans to hit Roto Taupo Wello (Karopoti Classic mtb race) and anywhere with riding in between. But if we can hire a sup somewhere would love to get a surf in. Hmm may have to pack a wetsuit, soft queenslander, dont like cold waters.

I grew up on an orchard just north of Napier and there are loads of good waves around that part of the world.........Gissy is 2.5 hrs north. Around Napier itself there are a few little reefs when u get some east in the swell. North you can hit spots like Stingray Bay and Waipatiki......or south of Napier you have some wicked waves around the north side of the kidnappers especially at the rivermouths - although depends on the sand build up. There is also a lovely right hand point break at Te Awanga on its day. South of the Kidnappers is OCean beach adn Waimarama - two super spots. Very very beautiful!! South of there there are laods of good waves to be found but I shall not name them.....just go for a paddle and you will find them............

From the Mount - you can get good waves around there - but some of the best waves in NZ can be found at Puni's Farm - whci is just a paddle across the harbour entrance then a stroll up the beach - its best if u have a boat - but I would think with a SUP it would be no worries. Just make sure you check out the tide direction as the water moves out and in at about 8 knots - so make sure you enter the water at the right spot! And also watch out for the big ships that use that channel. North of there about 45mins is Wahi Beach and the start of the Coromandle Peninsular where pretty much every beach has good waves when there is swell. THere are some excellent reef and point type setups as well. If u get Whanga Bar on a good day you will be one lucky fella!!!!

Enjoy!!!

Wow, thanks TED ! I havn't been to NZ since taken up SUP, so I will indeed see it with different eyes this time, not just for the MTB (5 trip previous, which were all pretty damn good)

Good thing the Mount shop rents wetties as well, excellent job.

For anyone who hasnt seen NZ, it's worth the trip over the ditch, and with our $ buying a $1.25 over there, good valu too.
