Paddles break very easily on mechanical conveyor belts, they just get perpendicular to the belt at some point and are easily broken when the rest of the parcels/luggage push on them while they are stuck on a tunnel entry or some kind of door.
Happens a lot with the post office.
Like DJ says, just heat to melt the glue.
