I spoke with organisers yesterday who wanted some confirmation on the SUP side of things. Here is the program for the Nationals at Coffs Harbour in December in conjunction with the National OC1 Outrigger Titles. This was just sent out today.

http://coffsoutriggers.com/oc12-national-marathon-titles-2009/oc12-national-marathon-titles-dec-2009/

They will be offering a 12km downwind (yes downwind one way). Also a 25km Iron Downwind and then a 25km relay (paddlers do half each ie. 12.5km and change over at half way mark via huge boat moored out to sea with the relief paddlers) Check the site for details.

All races cater for all 3 board categories except the 25km Iron which will be for Unlimited only. All races offer age categories of Under 40's and Over 40's.

This is a great weekend !!

Cool Ali....Both distances are one way downwind. I did notice on the program that the 12km wasn't listed unless I'm just not seeing it ??

I thought they were doing a Sunday run as well???

The first draft I saw they had the Oc1 on one day and then the SUP on the next day which worked out well for those paddlers who wanted to do both the OC1 and SUP races.

I thought that was why the Hawaiians were coming down to do both not just one?

I know that GSI have got a tent out and are doing SUP demos with Aaron / Woogie

dont think they have a 6 week waiting period for us to complete 25 km robbo

it would take a serious support boat for those beers and family sized mexican seafood supreme n pesto pies i'll need for the paddle

dont think i'll have a board worthy of it as a guy has his sites on my ol trust 12'glide barrel chaser/head hunter or was it barrel hunter/head chaser

Hey Sue, its on the 2nd page of the SUP/Ski program at 10am on Sunday.

Jodie, it looks like the SUP clinic will be on Saturday - so i'm guessing after the 25km race?

You should get hold of one of the new naish window boards, perfect for carrying ice and beers for a long paddle like this!

Dogman...you should track down a board like the one I paddled at the BOP. It's the orange one in front of pic. The sunken footwell tray would be perfect for filling up with ice and beers and seafood. Then you just have to bend down for a refill. Might have to borrow DJ's Crocs though cause your feet would freeze up !!

Hi Sue, I just checked the program again and it looks like the 25km race is now only open to SUPs in relay format, and the Iron divisions seem to have been removed?
Do you know whether this is the case? It would be a real pity if some people had to miss out because they didn't have a partner organised for the relay. I know there are a few of us who are keen to paddle the 25km solo.

Yeah the Iron race has been remove due to time restrains they are trying to push everyone into the 12 km on the Sunday.

I think when Woogie last spoke with them there was only one person who had entered he gave his feed back from last year and they have opted to 25 km relay and then 12 km Solo on the Sunday

Hi guys, Lynchie here from Coffs. I'm on the organising committee for the Nationals race weekend. Here's a rundown on who's coming:-

Kai Bartlett: 3 times Molokai Open Men’s Champion, multiple winner Hawaiian OC1 race series, and SUP world surfing champion.

Lauren Spalding (Bartlett): 6 times Molokai Open Women’s Champion, Dual Olympic Kayak K1 & K4 representative for USA. SUP surfing champion.

3 Generations of one of the Legendary Hawaiian paddling families.

Nappy Napoleon (grandfather): Multiple Molokai champion in OC1 & OC6 canoes, competed in 52 Molokai crossings (races)
Aaron Napoleon (son): SUP world surfing champion, multiple Molokai men’s champion.
Riggs Napoleon (grandson) age 15: Top 10 SUP Molokai competitor, multiple OC1 race winners.

Pat Dolan age 22: USA Olympic Kayak representative, multiple C1 race champion.

Manny Kulukulualani: World OC1 Race Co-Ordinator, multiple OC1 race winner.

There's clinics on Friday, Saturday including SUP. Also I'll be able to confirm a couple of other world class Americans will be there as well by next week on our website.

In relation to the 25k (actually 28k after paddling out and back to the start & finish lines) We have been advised by Woogi to remove the SUP 25k Iron as an option because of time constraints and field spread. We expect to have over 300 craft on the water at one time with only 16 support craft.

If you guys can show us that you've got the numbers who want to do it Iron we'd be happy to review our decision, but to date we had only one expression of interest.

If demands there we'll make the change, we want to make this a "must do" event for SUP paddlers but I'll need some feedback with likely numbers to make it happen.

You can email me on [email protected]

I'll wait to hear from you!

Cheers
Lynchie

I agree with woggie on this it was a very hard race last year with no wind and strong currents, most of the time it felt like i was going backwards. If the wind blows it could be a different picture and could be good but my thoughts are if there is no wind the 12km would be enough. I will be trying my best to get there and hopefully if there is 30knots forecast we can still do the long race..

Please excuse my ignorance on this (I have been travelling a lot this year) but can you send me more info on the SUP world surfing championships? I must have missed reading about this.

Hi...there was a rumour going around that the 25km Relay race has been called off. Just confirming that this is not true.

The RELAY RACE IS STILL BEING HELD.

The organisers confirmed that there only about 8 outrigger teams confirmed for this relay event and over 100 x 25km Iron outrigger paddlers racing at the same time. They did wonder whether it was worth hiring the huge change over boat (expensive) for only 8 teams but they are counting on there being quite alot of SUP RELAY teams entering on the day.

Just to let you all know that the 25km Iron Downwind race will get priority of the best wind, whether that be Saturday or Sunday. So please check this site on Friday night (I will keep you updated) as to which event is on what day.

The Sign-on desk will operate at the following times:-

Friday: 3pm – 6pm
Saturday: 6.30am – 10am
Sunday: 6.30pm – 9am

Just so I can let the organisers know roughly how many RELAY TEAMS are planning on entering can you let me know today or Friday lunchtime at the latest so I can inform them of our intent. PM me, post here or text me on 0414 796 323.

Just confirming the 25KM RELAY RACE IS STILL ON FOR SUP !!

See you all on the weekend.

Latest Update

The 25km SUP Relay race will definately be held TOMORROW (Saturday).

The Briefing will be held at the Coffs Yacht Club (Venue site) at 10.30am.

The Organisers will tell us there which way the race will run. And then they will allow up to 2 hrs until the race will start to give paddlers time to get organised and for the wind to pick up.

Don't forget to come earlier to register.
