Hello friends,
in our school we have Mistral Pacifico, that are ok but not great for waves.
Now locally there are few more boards available....
Laid Hamilton 11 and 11'6.
South Point Bonga 10.
and South Point kalama 11'6.

I also have all new Starboard on the way but it will be another month or two and I can't wait....
Any recommendation from who tried the boards.
I want something nice to paddle as my Mistral but fast and loose in waves.
Any help is really appreciated.
Bye Jankie

The Naish boards have a very durable finish and will handle the knocks they will get in a school environment. The 11'6" is probably the best for teaching on and it handles smaller surf very well. I havn't tried mine in anything over waist high yet but I am very impressed with it in small waves.
Cheers

Hello again,
please note that I do not need more board for the school.
I need for me ti use in Surf.
Actually we used the Mistral Pacifico in well over head high waves and they do the job.
But too stiff.

Please Please Please....
I'm now down to Bonga 10' against Laird Hamilton soft top 11'.
There is a difference of 300 US$ in between!!!
And they don't let me try the boards... so I really want to be sure.
I'm afraid that the Bonga will be difficult to paddle...
Anyone had tried them both?

IMO...For a SUP school there is one clear winner out of these boards...even tho you're looking for a wave specific type board.

Out of the Laird Hamilton 11 and 11'6...South Point Bonga 10...and South Point kalama 11'6..The Kalama would be my choice.

I've not used one in the waves but I've heard they go well in the surf.

The others will be a bit too tippy and less stable unless they are for kids or fly weights or very experienced at SUP..both the Bonga and 11' Laird are pretty narrow. (27")

The 11'6" Laird should also be very good (they're a bit wider) but I've never seen or riden one.

Here's a pic of me giving a friends wife some help on her first go at SUP'ing...She's on the Kalama..It's a perfect board for learning on.

Also...I hope to have a go on a Bonga today so I will let you know what I think.

Also here's my 14 yr old daughter on the Kalama.

Hi KSBali,

I weigh 75kgs.
I've had a couple of sessions on the Bonga & at 10' X 27" I found it good in perfect windless clean surf - but it becomes a real handfull in windy cross-chop & chunky swell.
I also tried the Kalama 11'6", it felt too large for me on the waves, but it is a good board to start out on.
I'm riding the 10'6" X 28" Naish, it turns real nice in the pocket & re-entries, cutbacks, nose rides are sweet. I like to ride the waves but I need a board with enough stability to handle paddling in wind-chop & messed up stormy swells as well as the good clean days.

Hello David and friends,
thank you for your reply.
The board will be actually for me and not for the school. In that sector we are already fine! Naish are not available in Indonesia same as C4 and other boards.
I need to do with what is available around here.
David I'm looking forward to you trying the Bonga.
Nobody as tried the Laird Hamilton smaller size around there?

I did try the Bonga today...It's sinky and tippy.

I'm 90 kg...It only just floats me and stepping back slightly to turn I had three quarters of the board under water.

A friend who is a little over 100kg paddled it and it was almost all under water while paddling.

The step rail thing makes the board very tippy..It just wants to roll over.

So..unless your under about 75kg give it a miss..IMO

It would be a great board in the waves...as long as you're not too heavy.

Thanks to the Bonga..I got wet..

mmhhh Thanks David,
I'm 70 kilos....
Becoming more confusing so now need someone who tried the Laird Hamilton 11'0 Soft Top.
I feel like the Starboard 11'2 will be my favorite board but is 2 months away!!

KsBali,

You really should try before you buy mate, boards are so different and riders too.
I did take a punt with my 10'6" as I couldn't demo it & how I justified it was like this -
The equation: Volume vs Stability vs Performance of your board & the conditions you'll mostly ride in. Also I had benefitted from riding both smaller & larger boards than the 10'6" so I could take a good guess at what it would be like.

If you're 70 kgs & you live in a place like Bali I would think the Bonga could work very well for you.

good luck

If I were you..I'd do all I can to get myself a PSH board..They are the ants-pants in stand ups for the surf imo..and are also very stable from what I've heard.

Maybe the 9'4" ripper or a 10'er...Contact Blane and see what he can do for you.. www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php?topic=856.0

Here's a pic of the PSH 10'6"...(not me btw)..It would also be an excellent all rounder for you.

I'd like to suggest one more option.

There is now a third Southpoint board. other than the Kalama and the Bonga.

It's a bigger Bonga..and it's 10'10"..called the Walden...and really nice..Same step rail but much wider and very stable.

Steve Walden make some of the best surfing long boards so it should surf well.

I had a go on it the other day on flat water and was very impressed.

Here's a link.. http://www.surfindustries.com/products/waldenSUP.php

Would you consider the Walden as a good alrounder, for both flat water paddling and surfing for a 6'2" 95 kg paddler? Something to advance limited SUP experience but not grow out of too quick?

DJ, I was following this topic as well.

How would you compare the 10'6 Naish 11'6 Naish. 11 Laird, and 11'2 starboard.

I am guessing at 82-83ks, you could grow into the 10'6 naish, and it sounds like its good for a flat water paddle if you use that one to race on, and also, the best in the waves. + you can stick a sail on it if you are that way inclined.

Yeah is quite amazing that nobody could comment on the Laird Hamilton 11 and 11'6.

Ciao Revvin,
yes but he is using the 11'6 mostly in flat water.
Can't really tell me much on the 11'0.....

For David, tell us some more about the Walden!
Compare to your Naish?
Looks interesting for the lenght but then the width at 31 inch seems way to wide!!
Boooohhhhh is getting more and more confusing.

I'm just about to head off on a three day motorcycle ride through the snowies (NSW) and once I'm back I'll post my pictures of the new Walden board.

BTW..I was a bit suss about the width also..but I think it's ok on this board because of the stepped rail..I'll explain more later.

NR...Just give me a few days to reply...and re the Laird...I've wanted to buy a Laird from day one..cos I'm a huge Laird fan.

I've never seen one in person and now I'm not so sure..27" is geting pretty narrow..and it's hard to tell just how floaty and stable they are without trying one.
