Since my last post about an SUP specific designed leach .. ( www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=53118 ) .. I've just received a couple of custom made leggies from Balin.. and yesterday I got to try it out for the first time and I took some pictures.

I'm just about to head off right now to do a down-winder (it's blowing 20 knots from the North) so these are just my pictures.. I'll post some comments later.

Anyone wanting to join us today (sat 25/7) are welcome.. We're paddling from St Kilda to Sandy with a starting off time of 11am at St Kilda.

Thanks to Jon Wilson at Balin for making these for me.. ..btw.. You can buy one of these from any shops that sell Balin products.. and most surf shops do..

Tail saver looks longer but the photo angle might be the reason.
DJ, how thick can they go with the leggie? 7mm, 8mm, 9mm??

I would like to get a super thick/strong 9fter for big waves. Would they do custom for anyone?

Brendan.. It's a knee cuff leach that can also be used as an ankle leach.

The idea is to have it on your knee for down-winders and have the coil section dropping to the deck and the straight section running across the deck to the tail.

I use a knee cuff leach for down-winders now and also in small waves.. Once the wave size gets up I then prefer to have it on my ankle.

Once I get my new GoPro working I'll try and get some footage showing what makes this odd coil-straight leash so good.

I'll give Jon at Balin a call tomorrow and ask what size leggie it is.. I know it's three meters long with two meters coiled and one meter of straight.

Anyone can call Jon Wilson at Balin.. and yes they do do custom leggies because they are local Aussie made.. His number is.. 03 5986 6069

He showed me some extra extra thick leggie material that they have and can use for anyone wanting a bullet proof leggie for those really big days.

Tech specs for you guys.

Strap can be either Ankle or Knee type both used for longboard surfing. The Tail saver attachment is our standard surfboard attachment which allows it to tie off pretty close to the plug.

We used a 2mtr. x 7.4mm urethane coil with an extra 1mtr. straight section. 2 x swivels to help the coil work properly. You should note it is not possible to make a coil that will retain it's "as new" snap. The harder the grade of urethane gets the less it will stretch. In theory though they will return to shape if re-heated to say around 180degC. Be careful coz it goes from solid to liquid without warning.

The idea is to have length for strength. IE if you have enough length and stretch hopefully the long stretch will allow these battle ships you guys ride to absorb the force that a wave will impart on the board, stretching it out until the wave force dissipates. We believe this is the key to "strength".

The coil is at the Knee end so that it is up and out of the way. It's all about keeping the length out of the water.

We do have some 9mm material and have made some protos for testing but haven't heard back from them as yet. We don't have mouldings to go with the 9mm so they have to be hand tied - which is OK but ugly.

We can supply your favoutite retailer if they order but as yet we havn't comitted to builidng stocks. So the design may change a little. I've just set the retail at $59.95 (urethane isn't cheap)

G'day Balin, welcome to the forum. I've got my name on the black one, so thanks for sorting them out for us. Looking forward to the next down-winder with this leash instead of my usual surfing one tied in knots to shorten it!

That's great Andrew..and welcome to the Breeze.. .. It's great to have you guys on board here.

No.. They're not just prototypes.. Any one selling Balin products (most surf shops) can just order one and it should just take a few days.

I like the idea of a coil leash and DaKine make a good one but if you happen to step back and on it it would feel huge under your foot and maybe cause you to fall.

These have all the coils hanging and the only bit that you can step on (if you did) would be the flat bit and not cause any problems.

It's great to be able to carry your board in and out of the water without the risk of tripping on your leggie..

That's gotta be one of the most embarrassing things to do.. and I've done it a few times..

Also.. Their rail-saver and rope combo is brilliant.. .. IMO

just curious, this is a good idea but why do you need a 10.0 leash on a down winder, surely a shorter leash even in this design would not drag in the water at all.this at 10.0 will still drag

Good point firstpoint.. ..and here's what I think.

Because of the coiled section it's only 4-5' long and will stretch to 10' long.

If you have it too short you will not be able to carry the board in or out of the water as well because the leash will be pulling too tight.

We often stop and wait for others to catch up on our down-winders and you need to be able to sit on the board at the halfway point with legs hanging down.

When you fall you want to be able to fall away from the board and swim to your board without it pulling.

I've tried shorter leaches and the work ok when in the standing position but not in the other circumstances listed above.

I also wanted a leach that can be used for down-winders and in the surf as well.

I found this 6' coil / 3' straight about 6" too long for my 12' Glide because the end of it was just touching water but should be just about right for my new 14' Glide.

I'm going to order another with either 1' shorther coil or 1' shorter straight section.. The good thing about Balin is that they will make it however you want it.

Paul..

A rail saver is the piece at the end of the leach that attachés to the board.. Some leaches don't have a rail saver and you risk damage to the tail of the board without it and you normally have a loop of rope (separate to the leach) that ties through the leach plug in the board and your normal leach attachés to that.

The Balin leach has not only has a rail saver but also the rope that goes thought the leach plug.

You should contact Jon at Balin and see what they can do for you (re sending one to you).

What is the standard length? 10ft

If you have a 9ft to 10ft board would this not make the leash a bit long once stretched out.
