Hello
I am new to the world of SUP and this site (which has alot of interesting information). I purchased a board about 3 weeks ago a NSP 11" with a Naish Carbon/glass paddle. I have taken the board out 3 times first two with the kids so I could not have a proper real go. Today I took the board out to the Bay in Melbourne it was a beautiful day just a nice breeze. Being new to the world of SUP and surf I am going to use some terminology and hopefully in the right way but I am not sure..........

So I had a nice go today for about 1.5hrs and boy what a work out, it was a nice breeze blowing towards the shore, the water was not still but not really rough or choppy, there were little waves OR maybe they are called runners???? not sure.
Anyway paddling out was quiet easy, I though with the breeze blowing at me it would be hard but the board kind of bounced nicely as I was heading out. I though coming in would have been easier but I actually found coming in much harder. The board did not bounce on top of the waves and actually seemed to stall or slow down at times. My thinking was that with the wind behind me I would fly in but it did not seem the case and I wasn't able to use or benefit from the little waves in any way.

Anyway I just found it interesting and maybe someone can give me some pointers good practice or how to glide nicely, or why it seemed harder coming in then going out. If anyone has any links to good SUP info sites please feel free to share.

Cant wait to get out there again though, its just such great fun.
Look forward in learning from the regulars on this site.
Cheers

You will not catch runners on an 11' NSP.. The last couple of days I've paddled my 10' Mana (similar type wave board to your NSP) down wind off the end of St Kilda marina and tryed to catch runners on it.. All you get is a slight surge at best.

Where are you in Melbourne?.. I'll be down at Sandy marina tomorrow (Saturday) for the sailing worlds family intro to sup day.. and tomorrow I'll be at St Kilda for the first sup event for the SUPHQ guys.

Maybe see you there.. Bring you NSP.

Hello
Thanks for the feedback and dam i missed your reply so I did not get down to Sandy beach.
I actually bought my SUP from the HQ guys in Sandringham.
Thanks for the runners feedbak since I cant catch runners on an 11 foot board I wont even worry about it, ill let it go and move onto other things.

I went out today in Mentone and it was nice a calm with just rolling hardly even there waves but it made it nice to come in after going out for a while.

I am looking to work on technique and anything else so please send me some pointers or links if you know of any
thanks

You can catch runners on an 11' board.. But just not that board.. You can also do down-winders on that board and still be lots of fun even if it is just surging and not really plaining.

Hi DJ

Just wondering what type of 11 foot board would allow yo to catch runners in the Bay. I assume it will be a difference in construction and brand.
