I'm keen to do another Yarra night paddle this wednesday.

It should be dead calm (fingers crossed)... Anyone else interested?

I'm thinking meet at the boatsheds (opp Fed Square) about 7-7.30pm.

Summer has come back to Melbourne after having Winter type weather the last couple of weeks.

It was glass down at St Kilda today.

..and glass in the city tonight.

Gday DJ
How do you go with the water police over there with your night paddles, as you dont seem to have any lights. We would cop a fine quick smart if we tried that on the Swan at night.

DJ,you could invest in a bike helmet that have the lights on the front and rear
That should stop the good guy's chasing the bad guy's!

Hi Guys,

Under the letter of the law on the Yarra at night you require a port and starboard light and a stern light.

You should be able to get the suction cup versions that they use on small fiberglass vessels.

DJ I would love to hook up with you guys on a night paddle and take some pics for you. Im a bit of an amateur shutter bug

Don't require navigation lights. Same as the rowers, legally we are required to have a white bow light, and a flashing white stern light. Two head torches covers this - one on your head for the front, and one around your waist, attached to a belt or a bumbag, pointing to the rear, flashing.
The reality is that soon after 7.30, all the rowers have finished, there is no river traffic, and plenty of light around from the city lights. Wearing bright cycling tops is a good idea.

Hi Dj,

Thats the first time I have ever heard of that configuration and I was a commercial Coswain and Master for 7 years.

But your right this is the current Vicco requirements:

White constant 180° on bow.
White flashing 180° on stern.
or
White constant 360°
(visible through 360°)
both
at a range of 300m

Under 7 meters in length you only need lights when your are in danger of collision.

OgSup, I'm 'JD', not to be confused with 'DJ'!
Planesailing, that's a strange rule. IMO you are in danger of a collision just before you run into something! And you never know when that might be....

JD ... Its from the Victorian Rules Book. I agree abit strange, but i think its
deasigned if your gunna get run over you should shine a light to let other
vessel know your there so they can take evasive action. BTW I have enough trouble
balancing in the day let alone at night so i would like to come but better get
some practice with a blindfold first

Scratches head,

Tosses Marine Safety Victoria and old Marine Board manuals out the door?

Straps hundreds of tricolor leds to SUP lights the all up in a chaser pattern and paddles down the Yarra.

Halfway changes to the cool under car neons just for a change and paints a red stripe down centre of board and ties fluffy dice to the paddle handle.

Stuff the rules
